Women’s Soccer Drops Road Contest to Sacred Heart, 3-1

9.1.19 | Women's Soccer

FAIRFIELD, Conn.—Temple women's soccer wrapped up its three-game road stretch in a tough battle against Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon, ultimately falling to 3-1 to the Pioneers. Sophomore Gabriela Johnson netted an equalizer in the 63rd minute, but Sacred Heart added two more goals to take the decision.

How it Happened
> Temple challenged Sacred Heart's goalie, Elyssa Kipperman, from the start. Johnson, Emma Wilkins and Hannah Alexander each fired shots on goal in a four-minute span, but Kipperman was able to save all of the attempts.
> In the 29th minute, Sacred Heart got on the board first to take a 1-0 lead.
> Seniors Emily Keitel and KJ Waghorne also contributed to Temple's offensive efforts in the first half. In 34th minute, Keitel launched a shot, but Kipperman made the save. Waghorne levied two shots, one on goal, toward the end of the half in an effort to even up the score.
> The Cherry and White were relentless to open up second half, dominating the Pioneers on the offensive end in the pursuit of an equalizer. The Owls put the pressure on Kipperman and the Sacred Heart back line, peppering six shots in as many minutes. Johnson and juniors Djavon Dupree and Julia Dolan all had looks on frame, but the goalie thwarted their attempts.
> In the 63rd  minute, Temple's efforts paid off. Johnson found the back of the net off an assist from senior Morgan Morocco to put the Owls on the scoresheet tie the game, 1-1.
> The Pioneers retook the lead less than two minutes later, as Michelle Clarkin scored for Sacred Heart.
> In the 80th minute of action, Clarkin netted her second goal of the day to put Sacred Heart ahead, 3-1.

Match Notes
> Tied for the most points (12) on the team last season, Johnson brought her season total to three after scoring her first goal of the season today. Johnson and Morocco (1g, 1a) are tied at the top of the points list for the Owls.
> In the first half of action, Temple recorded seven shots, five of which were on goal. In the final 45 minutes of play, the Owls fired 10 more shots, five on frame, in an effort to cut into the Pioneers' lead. 10 different players had looks on goal.
> Senior Morgan Basileo tallied five saves on Sunday afternoon, increasing her season total to 21 through 270 minutes of play.

From Coach O'Connor
> "We want to get the balance right between attacking and defending," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "Over the course of the season, there will be game like this one where everything seems to go against you. We cleaned up our play and regained our rhythm after half time, When we scored our goal, at that point it looked like only one team was going to win, us. Once we tied it up, we had a couple calls not go our way. We stopped doing what had been successful for us, but we should have had the game put away by then. Going forward, we need to control what we can, like taking advantage of our chances we putting them in the back of the net."

Next Up
> Temple will play at the Temple Sports Complex for the first time this season on Thursday, Sept. 5 as the Owls host the Lehigh Mountain Hawks. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
