Men's Soccer Falls 3-0 to No. 13 Georgetown in Labor Day Match-Up

9.2.19 | Men's Soccer

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Temple University men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 contest to No. 13 Georgetown on Labor Day in Washington, D.C. The nationally ranked Hoyas close out opening weekend 2-0, while the Owls fall to 0-2 against two high-class opponents.

How it Happened
> The Owls came out strong from the start against their nationally ranked opponent, applying pressure early to startle the Hoyas. One of the first opportunities of the game in favor of Temple in just the fifth minute, when sophomore Andres Charles controlled the ball in the center. With a quick turn he slipped the ball through to freshman Sean Karani, who set it back to Amir Cohen. Cohen ripped a low strike to the left, but the Georgetown keeper was there to make the play.
> Temple saw another solid chance in the 15th minute when Charles sent an inswinging corner flying from the left side. Despite multiple Owls waiting in preparation at the far post, the Georgetown goalie stepped up to deny a sure chance for Temple.
> The Cherry and White battled the No. 13 Hoyas in an even possession match for much of the first half. Momentum began to switch in favor of Georgetown in the 25th minute, when the Hoyas got on the board first thanks to a Sean Zawadski goal.
> Despite the Owls keeping the pressure on strong, the Hoyas got on the board again in the 39th minute. Dylan Nealis got on the end of a Paul Rothrock corner kick to put Georgetown up two.
> No. 13 Georgetown sealed the deal in the 57th minute when Dante Polvara rocketed a shot down the center from almost 25 yards out, expanding their lead to 3-0.
> While the Owls struggled to connect the execution pass in the final third, the squad maintained possession and matched up well against a perennially dominant Georgetown team.

Game Notes
> Freshman Aly Camara earned his first start in Cherry and White today, which was the lone change in the starting line-up from Temple's season-opener.
> Redshirt freshman Mathieu Gadet earned his first minutes in Cherry and White after joining the Owls from Toulouse, France this season.
> No. 13 Georgetown weighed the advantage on the box score today, leading the Owls in shots (14-9), shots on goal (7-5), saves (5-4) and corners (3-1).
> It was a chippy match on the field in D.C. that featured six bookings and 20 fouls.
> Sophomore Elias Hellgren Villegas led the Cherry and White in shots on the day, putting a pair on target.

Up Next
> The Owls will complete their two-game road stretch on Saturday, Sept. 7 as they head to Philly Soccer Six foe Villanova for a 1 p.m. match-up.
