Men's Soccer Heads to Cross-Town Foe Villanova Saturday for 1 p.m. Match-Up

PHILADELPHIA – Following a week of diligent training, the Temple University men's soccer team will travel across town on Saturday, Sept. 7 to take on the Villanova Wildcats. Kick-off for the Philly Soccer Six match-up is set for 1 p.m.

Last Time Out
> Temple is looking to bounce back from a 3-0 loss to the nationally ranked Georgetown Hoyas, who have jumped from No. 13 to No. 6 in the national polls since the squads met on Monday.
> The Owls came out strong from the start against their nationally ranked opponent, applying pressure early to startle the Hoyas. One of the first opportunities of the game in favor of Temple in just the fifth minute, when sophomore Andres Charles controlled the ball in the center. With a quick turn he slipped the ball through to freshman Sean Karani, who set it back to Amir Cohen. Cohen ripped a low strike to the left, but the Georgetown keeper was there to make the play.
> The Cherry and White battled the Hoyas in an even possession match for much of the first half. Momentum began to switch in favor of Georgetown in the 25th minute, when the Hoyas got on the board first thanks to a Sean Zawadski goal.
> Despite the Owls keeping the pressure on strong, the Hoyas got on the board again in the 39th minute. Dylan Nealis got on the end of a Paul Rothrock corner kick to put Georgetown up two.
> No. 13 Georgetown sealed the deal in the 57th minute when Dante Polvara rocketed a shot down the center from almost 25 yards out, expanding their lead to 3-0.
> While the Owls struggled to connect the execution pass in the final third, the squad maintained possession and matched up well against a perennially dominant Georgetown team.
 
Scouting the Owls
> Head coach Brian Rowland entered his second year at the helm of the program after a statement inaugural season last fall. In 2018, his first win as head coach was a memorable one as it came over the nationally ranked ODU Monarchs in the beginning of September. The Owls then went on to dish the nationally acclaimed UCF Knights (2019 preseason No. 15) one of just three losses all season.
> Returning as a dominant threat up top for Temple is senior captain Lukas Fernandes. In a standout junior campaign, the 2018 All-AAC selection led the Owls in goals, assists, shots, shots on goal, points and game-winning goals. To kick off his final season in Cherry and White, Fernandes was unanimously selected to the preseason All-AAC squad. Fernades currently leads the team in shots with five.
> Temple remains strong down the spine of the field, returning 2018 All-Rookie selections in Charles and Jalen Campbell. The squad remains anchored by captains Pierre Cayet and Nick Sarver in the back line, and senior Simon Lefebvre will defend the Owls between the posts for the second straight year.
> The Owls are yet to notch their first goal of the season, but have fired off 24 shots with 10 on frame. Lefebvre has saved six shots in a pair of matches so far on the year.

Scouting the Wildcats
> Villanova is coached by Tom Carlin in his 11th year at the helm of the program. Opening up the season 2-0, the Wildcats are looking to maintain their undefeated record and extend their streak of clean sheets to three as they have not yet conceived a goal this season.
> The squad is coming off of a statement 5-0 win over Delaware in their season-opener that was followed by a 1-0 win over William & Mary on Tuesday. A strong first half and a clean sheet lifted the Wildcats to victory after the freshman pair of Marcus Brenes and Lyam MacKinnon connected for the lone goal of the night.
> Six Wildcats are tied at one goal on the season, but MacKinnon leads the squad in points with five after dishing out three assists this season. He also leads the team in shots with eight.
> Carson Williams is 2-0 between the posts for Villanova after logging all 180 minutes played this season. The junior is yet to let a ball by him in 2019 and has saved two shots.  

The Series
> The Owls hold the series advantage over the Wildcats with a 24-10-4 all-time record. In 2018, the squads battled to a 1-1 draw after the game was cut short by lightening in the 71st minute. Fernandes notched the lone goal for then Owls in the 18th minute of game action in last year's match-up.
