Women's Soccer Drops 2-1 Contest at Penn
9.22.19 | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA— Temple women's soccer (2-4-3, 0-0 AAC) had a strong first half against Penn on Sunday night, but ultimately fell to its Philly foe, 2-1, behind two second half goals by the Quakers.
How it Happened
> The first strong look of the night came from the boot of sophomore Gabriela Johnson. She fired a left-footed strike from the top of the box in the 15th minute, but Penn's keeper was in place to make the save.
> The Owls got on the board first in the 34th minute. Sophomore Hailey Gutowski ripped the initial strike on goal, but Penn's keeper got a hand on it to deflect the attempt. Junior Emma Wilkins gathered the rebound and buried it in the back of the net.
> Temple kept the pressure on the Penn defense after going out to a 1-0 lead. In the 39th minute, Gutowski sent a ball into the box. It bounced around at the feet of several players before finding junior Bella Sorrentino, whose shot was blocked. Junior Arryana Daniels corralled the deflection and sent a shot on frame, but a lunging save from Penn's keeper on the goal line thwarted the attempt.
> In the 47th minute, senior Morgan Basileo leapt into action and made a diving save to stop a bending ball sent on goal by Penn's Emily Sands.
> Penn's Kat Larson netted the equalizer in the 51st minute to tie the match, 1-1. Three minutes later, the Quakers took a 2-1 lead when Emma Loving scored the game-winner off an Allie Schachter assist.
Match Notes
> Wilkins scored her second goal of the season and Gutowski tallied her second assist of the year. Gutowski (2g, 2a) is now tied with Johnson (2g, 2a) at the top of the Owls' offensive production list with six points each. Wilkins (2g, 1a) is close behind with five points.
> Basileo made seven saves against the Quakers. She leads the American in saves (68) and saves per game (7.56).
