Men's Soccer Hosts ODU for 3 pm Match-Up Tuesday

9.30.19 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple men's soccer team (2-5, 0-1 AAC) will return to the Temple Sports Complex on Tuesday, Oct. 1 to host the Old Dominion Monarchs (1-5-1, 0-2-1 C-USA). The nonconference match-up is slated for 3 p.m. as the Owls look to extend their home win streak to three.

Last Time Out
> The Owls dropped their first American Athletic Conference match of the year on Friday when they fell 0-2 to No. 12 UCF in Orlando. Temple battled its nationally recognized opponent throughout the first half despite going down just three minutes in, but momentum shifted in UCF's favor for the second 45 minutes to hand the Knights their first conference victory of the season.
> The Owls opened their conference slate with possession and worked their way into UCF's defensive third off the whistle, but the offense-driven Knights countered the opportunity to earn a corner kick just three minutes in. UCF capitalized on what ended up being its only shot on goal of the first half when Louis Perez lofted the ball to the top of the six and found the head of Yoni Sorokin, who placed it on frame to give the Knights an early lead.
> Despite going down early, Temple was resilient in the back-and-forth possession match. One of the first opportunities for the Owls came in the 20th minute when freshman Lior Nesher fired off a low-driven shot down the center from outside the 18, but UCF's Yannik Oettl got behind the play to make his first save of the match.
> It was a tale of two halves after UCF came out firing for the second 45 minutes of action. After entering into the locker room trailing the Knights in shots just 4-7, UCF held the Cherry and White shotless in the second 45 minutes of play while firing off 10 shots themselves. Momentum shifted in UCF's favor after Temple was forced to play down a man for almost 40 minutes due to back-to-back yellow cards on Mickael Borger.
> UCF's intense offensive pressure was awarded in the 77th minute when Louis Perez dished out his second assist of the night, this time distributing to Jonas Schmalbach who slipped the ball past Simon Lefebvre to seal the victory for the Knights.

Scouting the Owls
> Temple is coached by Brian Rowland in his second season at the helm of the program. Since beginning to lead the Cherry and White, Rowland has transformed the level of play and shifted the focus to greatness as the Owls strive to reach new heights.
> The Owls currently sit at 2-5 after opening the year to a challenging nonconference slate and facing one of the conference's toughest opponents last Friday. Conceding eight goals in seven games played, the Temple defense continues to battle as the Owls strive to put the pieces together offensively. Outshooting opponents 93-60 so far this year, Temple has found the back of the net four times in its seven games this season.
> Senior captain Lukas Fernandes leads the Temple offense with two goals for four points on the year. Both goals came two weeks back in a brace against Lafayette, but he has not let up the offensive pressure since, firing off 23 shot attempts with 15 on target in six games played.
> Lefebvre has been a force between the posts for Temple, thwarting 22 shots on frame in 630 minutes played. The Ossun, France native has allowed eight goals in seven matches and has led the Owls to two shutout victories. He posted a season-high six saves on Friday in the Owls 2-0 loss to No. 12 UCF.

Challenge Accepted
> The Owls have faced a contingent of the nation's top teams so far this season and will continue to be tested against perennially strong opponents for the remainder of the year. No. 12 UCF was the second ranked opponent they faced this season after falling to now No. 2 Georgetown (then No. 13) 3-0 in early September. In total, nine teams on Temple's schedule have appeared in the national polls this season.
> Many teams that appeared in week four's top-25 are familiar opponents for Temple, in No. 2 Georgetown (L, 0-3), No. 8 SMU (play 11/5), No. 9 St. John's (play 10/8), No. 12 UCF (L, 0-2), No. 17 Louisville (play 10/22) and No. 22 Rutgers (L, 0-1).

Scouting the Monarchs
> Old Dominion is coached by Alan Dawson in his 23rd year heading the program. So far this season, he's led the Monarchs to a 1-5-1 record with the lone victory coming over VCU on Sept. 17.
> The Monarchs are coming off of a 1-4 loss against Marshall (RV) on Friday. The Thundering Herd netted the first goal of the match less than one minute in and responded with three more goals to capture the victory. The lone goal for the Monarch's came in the 80th minute off the book of Sebastien Hauret, his second of the season.
> The ODU offense is led by redshirt junior Deniz Dogan, who has eight points from four goals this season. The Bruhl, Germany native has fired off 14 shots and notched the game-winner in the squad's lone win over VCU.
> Freshman Djibril Doumbia has defended the Monarchs between the posts for 670 minutes in seven games played. The rookie has conceded 18 goals for a 2.42 goals against average and has saved 28 shots as ODU has been outshot 78-95 so far this season.

The Series
> Temple and ODU have faced just three times as the Owls have earned a 1-2-0 record against their Conference USA opponent.
> Temple's win over ODU was a memorable one, as it marked the Owls' first victory of 2018 and Rowland's first Cherry and White win at the helm of the program. The win came over Labor Day Weekend last year when the Owls downed the No. 25 Monarchs, 1-0. The game-winning, man-down goal came in the 63rd minute and Temple held its nationally ranked opponent scoreless for the remainder of play.
