Sabre Takes Gold at North American Cup

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - In a successful weekend at the January North American Cup, the Temple sabre squad took home gold in the team competition. The Owls saw two other top-8 finishes over the four-day event.
The first day saw three foilists compete, with Aryana Abtin taking 84th, Megan Ross tying for 106th, and Cassie Navalta finishing in 160th out of 172 participants.
The second day saw an individual event and a team event. Freshman Sarah Park tied for 45th, senior captain Quinn Duwelius took 67th, Naomi Ross finished in 123rd, and Marielle Luke placed 164th against 199 epeeists. The foilists got their second chance to compete later that day, finishing in 13th place out of 21 teams.
The sabre squad represented the Owls on day three, taking gold in the team event. Malia Hee, Emma Pincus, Kerry Plunkett, and Zoe Turner finished in first-place against 10 teams, entering the Round of 16 as the No. 1 seed and earning a first-round bye. Temple defeated the Miracle Fencing Team 45-22 to advance to the semis, before earning a spot in the finals with 45-20 victory over the JHU Y10 2009 Bronze Medalists. The Owls defeated the Boston Fencing Club in a tight finals round, taking the crown with a 45-40 win.
The final day of the North American Cup, Temple earned spots in the top-8 of the epee team event and the sabre individual event. Senior Kerry Plunkett finished in eighth-place, falling in a close 15-13 bout against eventual-champion Monica Aksamit. Hee took 49th place, Pincus took 57th place, Eva Hinds tied for 70th, and Zoe Turner finished in 76th place out of 148 sabrists.
In the epee team event, the Owls earned a sixth-place finish after entering the Round of 16 as the No. 4 seed and falling to Get Vectored in a tight 45-43 match.
Temple will return to competition this weekend, heading to the Penn State Invitational in State College, Pa. The Owls will face the Nittany Lions, Columbia, Yale, Duke, and Haverford.
