Owls in the NFL - Week 6
10.20.20 | Football
PHILADELPHIA – Former Owls enjoyed continued success in the NFL this week as they close in on the middle of their seasons, with 17 players from North Broad dressing to play on Sunday and Monday.
In the best kicking performance in the NFL so far this year, Denver's Brandon McManus (2009-12), in his 100th career regular season game, converted six field goals on six attempts in a 18-12 win over New England. Along with this being his single game career-high for field goals, McManus is also the first kicker in Denver Broncos history to make six or more field goals in a game. McManus ties Justin Tucker for the most games (6) in NFL history with multiple 50+ yard field goals, having converted from 52 and 54 yards. He also made field goals from 45, 44, 27, and 20 yards on the day. He is the first kicker to make 6+ field goals and account for all his team's points in a win since Chris Boswell did it for Pittsburgh in the 2017 playoffs. McManus has now converted his last 33 field goal attempts from within 40 yards.
Arizona linebacker Haason Reddick (2013-16) had a monster game on Monday night, getting two sacks, five tackles, and a pass defended in his first start of the season, a 38-10 win over Dallas. Also on Monday, Buffalo offensive lineman Dion Dawkins (2013-16) and linebacker Tyler Matakevich (2012-15) played host to the Kansas City Chiefs. Dawkins and the offensive line did not allow a sack and Matakevich had a special teams tackle in the 26-17 loss.
Carolina and head coach Matt Rhule dropped a close contest 23-16 to the now 5-1 Chicago Bears. Wide receiver Robby Anderson (2011-13, 2015) had four receptions for 77 yards, including a 39-yard reception in the third quarter. Anderson now has 566 receiving yards this year, which is 2nd in the NFL behind only DeAndre Hopkins. Captain linebacker Tahir Whitehead (2008-11) had five tackles on the day and a quarterback hit, and tight end Colin Thompson (2014-16) helped the team by blocking on offensive drives throughout the game and on special teams. Wide receiver Keith Kirkwood (2014, 2016-17) saw his first action of the season after recovering from an injury and caught a 13-yard pass in the third quarter. Quarterback Phillip Walker (2013-16) was the backup for Teddy Bridgewater in the loss.
Elsewhere around the NFL, Indianapolis cornerback Rock Ya-Sin (2018) had his best game of the season so far, recording six tackles, two passes defended, and a forced fumble in a 31-27 comeback victory against Cincinnati. Houston linebacker Jacob Martin (2014-17) had a tackle and recovered a fumble in the third quarter against Tennessee, after forcing a fumble last week. Like last week, Houston ended up scoring a touchdown on the ensuing drive after the turnover, which gave the Texans a 23-21 lead. The turnover ended up being important as the game went to overtime, though Houston ended up losing the game 42-36.
Two rookie Owls played each other on the field on Sunday, as Minnesota cornerback Harrison Hand (2019) and Atlanta offensive lineman Matt Hennessy (2016-19) faced off in Minneapolis. Hand earned the first defensive snaps of his career and played well, compiling five tackles and a pass defended. Hennessy saw action on special teams, and Atlanta ended up with the 40-23 victory.
Four other rookie Owls played this week, meaning six players from last year's team saw action in the NFL this past week. Washington wide receiver Isaiah Wright (2016-19) had four receptions for 25 yards and added a one-yard carry and a punt return in a 20-19 loss to the New York Giants. Carolina safety Sam Franklin (2016-19) saw his most extensive action of the year on defense and recorded two tackles in the loss to Chicago. Philadelphia linebacker Shaun Bradley (2016-19) also saw his most action on defense this year and had a tackle in a 30-28 loss to Baltimore. Tampa Bay linebacker Chapelle Russell (2016-19) made his NFL debut after getting called up to the active roster this week and saw action on special teams in a 38-10 victory over Green Bay.
