After a disappointing loss against UCF in Temple's final road game of the season, the Owls return home to take on ECU for the front end of back-to-back home games on Saturday, November 21. Kickoff is set for 12:00pm and will air on ESPN+ and 97.5 The Fanatic.
Last Week
The Owls dropped their fifth game of the season last week against UCF, bringing their record to 1-5. Two costly turnovers on Temple's first two possessions led to two quick UCF touchdowns and the Knights never looked back after that, maintaining the lead throughout the contest. The Owls, playing for the third straight week with a roster depleted by injuries and COVID-19 protocol issues, stayed close following the early 14-0 deficit and trailed by 21-3 at the half. Â However, UCF, which leads the nation in total yards (619.1 ypg.), exploded for 17 third quarter points to break the contest open. For the Owls, quarterback Re-al Mitchell made his first career start. On the other side of the ball, defensive end Arnold Ebiketie continued his impressive season, recording another sack and forced fumble while leading the team with nine tackles.
Last Time vs. ECU
The last time that these two sides met was back in October last season where the Owls came away with a 27-17 win over the Pirates in their first conference game of the season. With the score tied 10-10 midway through the second quarter, the Owls scored 17 straight points courtesy of a one-yard rushing score from Re'Mahn Davis and a receiving touchdown from wide receiver Isaiah Wright to put the game to bed. The Owls used a balanced attack on offense throughout the contest, throwing for 253 yards and rushing for 237. Davis had his second consecutive 100-yard rushing game and had a career best 157 yards on 24 carries for one touchdown. Both Wright and wide receiver Branden Mack broke the 100-yard receiving mark. On the defensive side, both Dana Levine and Ifeanyi Maijeh wreaked havoc at the line of scrimmage, recording one sack and two tackles for loss each.
Last Time vs. ECU @ Lincoln Financial Field
The last time that Temple hosted ECU was back on October 6, 2018 when the Owls defeated ECU 49-6, which marked the largest margin of victory that Temple has ever had against an FBS opponent. The Owls came out fast out of the gates, scoring 28 straight points before the Pirates could get on the scoreboard. A Ryquell Armstead rushing touchdown put the Owls up 21-0 early in the second quarter after two first quarter passing touchdowns from quarterback Anthony Russo. Shortly after Armstead's touchdown, Isaiah Wright scored his first of two touchdowns of the afternoon, this one being a 59-yard punt return. Russo completed 21 passes for 254 yards and four touchdowns in this contest as the Doylestown, Pa., native had as many touchdowns as incompletions. All four touchdown passes were caught by different receivers (Randle Jones, Branden Mack, Sean Ryan, Wright). On the ground, Armstead scored for the third game in a row as he rushed for 91 yards. Defensively, Temple forced ECU to punt 11 times after only converting on 4-of-18 third downs. The defense forced the Pirates to go three-and-out nine times out of 16 drives.Â
