Owls in the NFL - Week 10
11.17.20 | Football
PHILADELPHIA – 15 former Owls took the field this week in the NFL, a week that included career milestones, NFL debuts, and multiple player and coach matchups.
The action started Thursday night, when Indianapolis and cornerback Rock Ya-Sin (2018) faced off against the Tennessee for first place in the AFC South. Ya-Sin totaled four tackles as Indianapolis won 34-17 and improved their record to 6-3.
The game on Sunday between Carolina and Tampa Bay was again a matchup between two former Temple head coaches, Matt Rhule and Bruce Arians. Arians ended up defeating Rhule for the second time this year, with Tampa Bay winning 46-23.
The game also featured six former Temple players, with five for Carolina and one for Tampa Bay. Carolina wide receiver Robby Anderson (2011-13, 2015) had four receptions for 21 yards, bringing his season totals to 64 receptions and 772 receiving yards, both the 5th most in the NFL.
Perhaps the biggest story from a Carolina receiver on Sunday came from tight end Colin Thompson (2014-16), who recorded his first career touch, reception, and score with a seven-yard touchdown catch from Teddy Bridgewater in the first quarter. Thompson also helped to block on a D.J Moore touchdown reception later in the first.
On the defensive side for Carolina, linebacker Tahir Whitehead (2008-11) had five tackles, and safety Sam Franklin (2016-19) made four tackles as both players earned the start. Carolina quarterback Phillip Walker (2013-16) saw the field after Teddy Bridgewater was injured late in the fourth quarter and completed two passes for 12 yards in his limited action. On the opposing side, Tampa Bay linebacker Chapelle Russell (2016-19) saw action on special teams in the win, as Tampa Bay improved to 7-3.
The game between Buffalo and Arizona featured three former Owls, with Buffalo offensive tackle Dion Dawkins (2013-16) and linebacker Tyler Matakevich (2012-15) facing off against Arizona linebacker Haason Reddick (2013-16), with Arizona pulling out a thrilling win 32-30 and improving to 6-3. Dawkins and Reddick, who were Owl teammates from 2013-16, were on the field against each other for all of Buffalo's offensive snaps, with Dawkins helping the offense to over 350 total yards, and Reddick totaling four tackles, including a tackle for loss. Matakevich again saw significant action on special teams in the loss, as Buffalo dropped to a 7-3 record.
Washington wide receiver Isaiah Wright (2016-19) had the best game of his rookie season, recording career-highs in receptions (6) and receiving yards (59), as well as making the longest reception of his career for 22 yards, in a 30-27 loss to Detroit.
Denver kicker Brandon McManus (2009-12) converted his two field goal attempts, from 33 and 50 yards, and made both his extra point attempts in a 37-12 loss to Las Vegas. McManus has now converted his last six field goal attempts from 50+ yards and has not missed a field goal from inside 40 yards since December of 2017, making 33 in a row.
Elsewhere around the NFL, Dolphins tight end Chris Myarick (2016-18) made his NFL debut on Sunday and saw action on offense and special teams in a 29-21 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Philadelphia linebacker Shaun Bradley (2016-19) had a tackle as he saw action on defense and special teams in a 27-17 loss to the New York Giants. On Monday night, Minnesota cornerback Harrison Hand (2019) saw action on defense and special teams in a 19-13 over Chicago.
