Football Wraps Up 2020 Season

11.30.20 | Football

With the cancellation of its final game against Cincinnati, Temple's football season ended on November 21. Of those teams that played this year, the Owls were the first team to conclude its 2020 season. The Owls began the season later than any FBS that didn't have its season completely canceled at any point. From first game to last game the seven game season lasted 43 days.

Over the seven games played, Temple lost 215 man-games due to COVID protocol, injury, opt-out, transfer rules, or suspension. That averages out to over 30 participants per game.
Temple played 82 different players this season. 25 played in a college game for the first time and another seven made their Temple debut.

Temple started 22 players for the first time in their careers. Only Navy (25), Army (25) and Air Force (24) had more.

Seven freshmen started at some point including three true freshmen – QB Kamal Gray, SAF Alex Odon, and LB Kobe Wilson – in the season finale vs, ECU. That does not include true freshman kicker Rory Bell.

Temple started 40 different players. Only five – DT Daniel Archibong, LB William Kwenkeu, WR Branden Mack, DT Ifeanyi Maijeh, and C C.J. Perez – started all seven games.

There were six different starting offensive line combinations. The only time the same combination started twice was weeks 3-4 at Memphis and Tulane.

Over the first three weeks of the season, the game's leading tackler was injured preventing him from playing another full game the rest of the year.
Navy - Isaiah Graham-Mobley (14 tackles) - played first half week 2 before missing the rest of the season
USF -  Yvandy Rigby (11) - never played again
Memphis - Audley Issacs (8) - never played again

DE Arnold Ebiketie had a breakout season with 42 tackles, 8.5 TFLs, 4.0 sacks, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery that he returned for a touchdown. He did that despite playing in only six games.

LB William Kwenkeu, a fifth-year player and first-time starter, led the Owls with a career-high 48 tackles.

True freshman SAF Alex Odom, earned starts in the final three games and tallied 15 tackles and a fumble recovery.

WRs Branden Mack and Jadan Blue continued to climb the Temple all-time receiving lists. Mack is currently sixth in receptions (131), seventh in yards (1,819), and fifth in touchdowns (15), while Blue is third in receptions (139) and 17th in yards (1,477).

Despite playing in just three games, QB Anthony Russo moved into third place in Temple history in completions (536), passing yards (6,287) and touchdowns (44). He is also fourth in attempts with 899.

Punter Adam Barry leads the AAC in punts inside the 20 with 17. His 44.0-yard average for the season was 6-yards better than his previous best.
