PHILADELPHIA – 13 former Owls were in action this past week in the NFL, with all of them playing on Sunday.
Carolina and head coach Matt Rhule faced off against the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday afternoon, and nearly pulled off the upset in a 33-31 loss. Wide receiver Robby Anderson (2011-13, 2015) had nine receptions, tying his career-high, for 63 yards in the game. Anderson now has 60 receptions on the year, tied for 3rd most in the NFL, and 751 receiving yards, good for 4th most in the league.
Rookie safety Sam Franklin (2016-19) again got the start for Carolina and had the best game of his young career, recording seven tackles, including a tackle for loss, as well as a QB hit. Franklin also recorded a key sack, the first of his career, on Patrick Mahomes in the third quarter, forcing Kansas City into a long field goal which they missed, keeping Carolina's four-point lead.
Also for Carolina, linebacker Tahir Whitehead (2008-11) recorded a tackle in the second quarter, and tight end Colin Thompson (2014-16) saw action blocking on offense and special teams, including on a Christian McCaffrey rushing touchdown.
Two Owls faced off against each other this week when Denver traveled to take on Atlanta. Atlanta offensive guard Matt Hennessy (2016-19) saw action on special teams in the 34-27 win, and Denver kicker Brandon McManus (2009-12) made his two field goal attempts from 43 and 41 yards and converted all three of his extra point attempts in the loss.
Buffalo offensive tackle Dion Dawkins (2013-16) led an offensive line that protected Josh Allen as he threw for over 400 yards in a 44-34 win over Seattle. Linebacker Tyler Matakevich (2012-15) again saw significant action on special teams in the win.
Indianapolis cornerback Rock Ya-Sin (2018) had two tackles in a 24-10 loss to Baltimore. Ya-Sin has now gone 17 consecutive games without allowing a touchdown in coverage, dating back to Week 4 of last season.
