Men's Soccer Players Earn Philadelphia Soccer Six Postseason Honors

2.13.20 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple men's soccer team had the opportunity to reflect on its 2019 fall season success at the Philadelphia Soccer Six banquet on Tuesday evening. Three Owls were named to the 2019 Soccer Six All-Star team three earned all-rookie honors to cap off their second season under the direction of head coach Brian Rowland.

Lukas Fernandes, Simon Lefebvre and Pierre Cayet each landed a spot on the All-Star team, while Sean Karani, Amir Cohen and Mickael Borger earned All-Rookie honors.

Fernandes earned the recognition after playing a pivotal role in Temple's success during his senior campaign. The Rochester, N.Y. native led the squad offensively with 11 points, notching three goals and a Philadelphia Soccer Six leading five assists to help Temple to an 8-8-2 record. The senior captain started all 17 games he played in last season and earned All-AAC honors for the second straight year to wrap up an illustrious collegiate campaign. After graduating in December, Fernandes moved to Pittsburgh to begin his professional career with Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC.

Cayet led the Cherry and White defensive unit all season while contributing greatly on set pieces to flame the Owls' offensive production. On the defensive end, the center back was a well-grounded playmaker that made numerous defensive stops to halt some of the nation's most skilled scoring threats. He captained the Temple defense that held opponents to just 11.6 shots per game and allowed just 22 goals in 18 games played. Offensively, he finished the season tied for the most goals on the team with three, and his seven-point contribution was third best for the Owls. The Brettes-les-pins, France native earned all-conference honors, was named to the AAC All-Tournament team and went on to become the sixth student-athlete in program history to be named to the United Soccer Coaches All-East Region team.

Lefebvre was key to Temple's success last season, playing all 1704 minutes between the posts to spearhead one of the top defensive units in the American Athletic Conference. He allowed just 22 goals in 18 games for a goals against average of 1.16 during his final season. He thwarted 57 shots against some of the nation's top offensive threats for a save percentage of 0.722, helping the Owls to an 8-8-2 overall record. He earned All-AAC second team honors for his efforts this past season and wrapped up his illustrious career in Cherry and White with a career goals against average of 1.21, the fifth best in program history. In January, Lefebvre was selected by D.C. United in the first round of the 2020 MLS SuperDraft. Chosen 21st overall, the Ossun, France native made history as Temple's highest-ever pick in the draft and is the program's only first round pick.

Karani left his mark during a standout freshman season, starting all 17 games he played in. The Wichita, Ks. native finished his rookie campaign ranked second on the team with nine points from three goals and three assists. He notched his first collegiate point with an assist against Lafayette and his first goal was a memorable one, as it was the equalizer in Temple's 2-1 double overtime win against Memphis on Oct. 12. He notched his first collegiate brace just four days later in a 3-1 win over USF and assisted Fernandes' game-winner against Louisville. Karani assisted the double-overtime golden goal that handed Temple its first-ever AAC tournament victory and earned All-Rookie honors from the American for his efforts last season.

Cohen started six of 11 games played for the Owls during his rookie season. He dished out his first assist in Cherry and White in the squad's 3-0 win over Lafayette on Sept. 13. Four days later, the Givatayim, Israel native scored the game-winner that lifted the Owls over Delaware, 1-0. He fired off 13 shots, seven of which he put on frame for a 0.538 shots on goal percentage.

Borger was another defensive force this season, starting all 17 games played for the Owls in 2019. He recorded five points from his defensive position after finding the back of the net twice and dishing out one assist. His first goal came in Temple's 3-0 win over Lafayette on Sept. 13 and he recorded an assist in Temple's 2-1 win over Louisville on Oct. 22. He helped the Owls snag their first-ever win over UConn just four days later, finding the back of the net for the second time during his rookie season to help the squad to a 2-1 win. Borger was named the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week on Oct. 28 for his efforts, and was a key member of Temple's success both offensively and defensively all year.
