Football Raises Money During COVID-19 Pandemic
4.17.20 | Football
PHILADELPHIA – The Temple University Football team is determined to do its part to help the local community during the national pandemic. To that end they have created a challenge to raise money to help two local food pantries to help those in need. The benefactors are Philabundance in Philadelphia and the Food Bank of South Jersey.
The first step was a lead gift from head coach Rod Carey who began the process with a $3,000 donation to each organization. "Many school kids only get fed one good meal each day and that's while they are at school. Without that structure, they may not be eating. Philabundance and the Food Bank of South Jersey can make sure that those kids, and others like them, can receive a good meal."
Then, Carey challenged his coaching staff and players to donate themselves. The roster was broken into teams and each team was challenged to raise more money than the others. While no one was forced to make a monetary donation, everyone was encouraged to find creative ways to help.
Within the first 72 hours, nearly $12,000 was raised. That is the equivalent to 60,000 meals.
The next step is to use the team's resources to increase the donations. Fans of Temple Football looking to contribute can now go to directly to http://phlb.convio.net/goto/TempleFootball (Philabundance) or https://donate.foodbanksj.org/TempleFootball (Food Bank of SJ) to donate.
