Join Coach Aaron McKie and the Sonkin Family as They Team Up to Boost Support for Student-Athletes
6.18.20 | Owl Club
The support from our loyal fans is helping Temple Athletics adapt to the ever-changing needs of our student-athletes and provide a safe and healthy environment for them to learn and compete in. Moved by the resilience of our student-athletes during the Covid19 pandemic, a Temple Head Coach and two members of the Owl Club's "The 9" are intent on making a big difference.
Â
"In this unprecedented time, I felt compelled to act," says men's basketball coach Aaron McKie. "This pandemic affected our student-athletes in numerous ways. I wanted to do my part to ensure all student-athletes had access to the resources they needed. I am proudly Temple Made and my experience as a student-athlete here helped shaped me into the person I am today. I want our student-athletes to have that same experience."
Â
If 400 or more Owl Club donors renew their gifts prior to the close of the fiscal year on June 30, 2020, Coach McKie will make a gift of $50,000 in support of student-athletes.
Â
Along with McKie, long-time athletics fans and supporters Mitch and Debra Sonkin have also stepped up to make an impact. They have pledged an additional gift of $50,000 toward student-athlete support if the Owl Club can raise $250,000 or more by June 30.
Â
"Debra and I wanted to do something special to recognize and honor our graduating student-athletes for their hard work, dedication, and success during their time at Temple," says longtime fan Sonkin. "This pandemic cut their final season short and has created immediate financial challenges for the athletics department. Echoing Coach McKie in that I'm proudly Temple Made, I hope other Owl alumni and fans will join us in supporting our talented student-athletes during these unprecedented times."
Â
Temple fans everywhere are invited to accept the challenge and help us continue to enhance our Student-Athlete Commitment. The Student-Athlete Commitment is Temple Athletics' promise to provide the necessary resources in the areas of academic excellence, athletic excellence, civic engagement, holistic development and career development. Contributions from fans that are joining the Owl Club for the first time, renewing their membership, or increasing their giving means greater resources to aid our students during this time.
