Men’s and Women’s Tennis Earn ITA Academic Honors

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple men's and women's tennis teams were named All-Academic teams by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as 12 players were named ITA Scholar-Athletes.
Men's tennis players Eric Biscoveanu, Paolo Cucalon, Marin Delmas, Thibault Frumholz, Enzo Brida, Michael Haelen and Francisco Bohorquez along with women's tennis players Cecilia Castelli, Ruoyu Chen, Oleksandra Doroshenko, Stefaniya Surikova and Yining Tian were all honored for their achievements both on the court and in the classroom.
The women's tennis team garnered a team GPA of 3.33 while the men's team achieved a GPA of 3.56.
To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, a student-athlete must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 for the current academic year (on a 4.00 scale) and be listed on the institutional eligibility form.
To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must meet the following requirements: 1.) have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale), 2.) all student-athletes included should be listed on the institutional eligibility form, and 3.) all varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year.
"I'm very proud of both the men's and women's teams," commented head coach Steve Mauro. "We strive to do well on the court but more importantly in the classroom. We have a very hardworking group of athletes that understand the importance of academics."
"Our academic advisor, Nick Plack, really helps our student-athletes and guides them in the right direction," added Mauro.
Eric Biscoveanu earns his third-straight ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition after graduating from TU in May with a 3.58 GPA and a History degree. The Yardley, Pa. native concluded his senior year with a singles record of 6-4, including a 5-3 mark in tournament action. When on the court with Delmas, the pair went 2-0 in doubles play.
Francisco Bohorquez earned his second career ITA Scholar-Athlete award as he completed his undergraduate degree in Economics with a GPA of 3.39. Bohorquez finished the season with the second-most doubles wins on the team, amassing a 9-3 record. The Madrid, Spain native ended the year with a singles mark of 6-4.
Enzo Brida collected his first-ever ITA Scholar-Athlete honor as he concluded his sophomore year with 3.53 GPA in Mechanical Engineering. He finished his second season in the Cherry and White with an 8-4 singles mark and 6-6 doubles record. Brida saw the most success with doubles partner Fumholz, as the pair went 4-2.
Paolo Cucalon earned his second ITA Scholar-Athlete honor with his 3.71 GPA in Marketing. The Palmira, Colombia finished his senior season with a singles record of 3-3 and a doubles mark of 3-4 before the year was cut short due to COVID-19. He collected a 3-2 doubles record with partner Marin Delmas in dual match action. The senior will earn his degree from Temple in August at the conclusion of the Summer II semester.
Marin Delmas was named a Scholar-Athlete by ITA following an impressive rookie campaign. The Lorient, France native led the Owls in both singles (15-3) and doubles (10-5) action. Delmas concluded his freshman year with a 3.81 GPA in Pre-Business.
Thibault Frumholz is another first-time ITA Scholar-Athlete as the sophomore concluded the year with a 3.92 GPA in Engineering. Frumholz collected a singles record of 10-8 during his first season with the Owls. In dual match doubles play, Frumholz and partner Brida secured a mark of 4-2.
Michael Haelen rounds out the men's honorees with his first ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition. The Finance major finished his junior year with a 3.32 GPA. Before the season was cut short, Haelen collected a singles record of 5-2 and doubles mark of 4-1, while he and doubles partner Bohorquez went undefeated at 2-0.
Cecilia Castelli collects her fourth-straight ITA Scholar-Athlete award after graduating with a 3.78 GPA in Marketing and International Business with a minor in Sport Management. The Vercelli, Italy native finished her senior season with a 5-5 singles record before the season was cut short.
For the second year in-a-row, Ruoyu Chen was named a Scholar-Athlete by ITA as she finished her sophomore year with a 3.76 GPA in Advertising. After missing the first six matches due to injury, Chen collected a singles record of 5-2 before the season was suspended.
Oleksandra Doroshenko earns her first Scholar-Athlete recognition from ITA after graduating with a 3.38 GPA in Marketing. Doroshenko finished the 2019-20 season with an 8-6 record at singles.
Stefaniya Surikova finished her sophomore year with a 3.70 GPA in Civil Engineering as she collected her first ITA Scholar-Athlete award. The Lipetsk, Russia native led the Owls at doubles with partner Doroshenko, as they finished the year at 12-8.
Last but not least, Yining Tian received her second ITA Scholar-Athlete honor at the conclusion of her sophomore year. The finance major owns a 3.81 GPA as she enters her third year at TU. Tian was the Owls' singles leader with her mark of 11-6.
