Phillips Gives Back to Hometown

9.28.20 | Field Hockey

Megan Phillips, a true hometown hero.

During the current global health pandemic, over 79 million tests have been performed in the United States. This astounding number does not come without the difficult and selfless work from volunteers throughout the country, such as Temple field hockey sophomore Megan Phillips.

A few months into the pandemic, "My friend sent me a link that the Delaware County Medical Reserve Corps was in need of volunteers for one of their testing sights," said Phillips. She signed up in April and began training in May. "I attended a full day of training where we did walk throughs of procedure and met other volunteers," she added.

The next day, Phillips reported back to her local high school in order to begin volunteering. As a part of the quality control team, Phillips would approach the vehicles, confirm information on the testing kit and then move them to the place where the tests were administered.

"In May, I barely knew anyone that had or thought they had COVID-19. But by stepping out of my bubble while I was home, I saw how many people in my surrounding community needed access to testing," Phillips explained.

Many people across the country were much better off staying at home during the uncertain early stages of the pandemic. However, Phillips acknowledged that "as someone at lower risk, I knew that it was something I should do."

Phillips recalled a specific moment in summarizing the volume of people that came through the site, "when I would send a car along to the next stage, I would turn around and see cars stretched all the way around the very large campus."

"The amount of cars was obviously noticeable, but what I took away was the amount of people that came out to volunteer," Phillips said.

Phillips reflected on the experience in saying, "It was pouring rain the entire day, which was fitting, but it was a great chance to give back."

The actions taken by Phillips, in a time where staying home may have been the easier thing to do, is yet another example of being Temple TUFF.
