Willie Rodgers Transfer

Getting to Know: Willie Rodgers

1.22.21 | Football

Fifth-year senior Willie Rodgers joins the Owls from Washington State University where the 6-4,  255-lb. defensive lineman played his first four seasons.

Over his four years with the Cougars, Rodgers played in 34 games and compiled 53 tackles, 13.5 TFLs and 8.0 sacks. He was a starter for most of his sophomore and junior seasons in 2018-19. Rodgers recorded a career-high five tackles and one sack against Oregon in a breakout game in 2018.

After two games in 2020, Rodgers entered the transfer portal and ultimately found his way to Temple University where he will contribute to a historically strong defensive program.

"The coaches really made me feel comfortable with the plays," said Rodgers. "I love the system and the scheme, plus being in Philadelphia was a huge bonus."

Rodgers, a Saginaw, Michigan, native played his first three years of high school football for Arthur Hill High in Michigan before moving to Colorado where he played his senior season. He was a Colorado 5A State Champion and second team all-state honoree while competing for Valor Christian High School – the same school that produced all-pro running back Christian McCaffery.

Rodgers was a multi-sport athlete who also helped his basketball team to a state title game. His basketball skills might be passed through the family genes as he is the nephew of former Michigan State and Golden State Warriors star, Jason Richardson.

The city of Philadelphia is a major drawing point for transfers who come from college towns. "It is livelier than some of the other places I've lived. There are always things to do and places to eat, and I love it here," said Rodgers in explaining his excitement of playing in Philadelphia.

The accomplished defensive lineman has set many goals for himself, but the team will always come first. "I just want to play my role and help the team however I can," Rodgers explained. "I want to be the best version of me. I want to get as much as possible out of myself."

Rodgers knows that living up to goals in this city is important and he wanted the fans of Philadelphia to know that he is excited to wear the cherry and white. "The city of Philadelphia is a hard-nose city and it fits me and what I represent perfectly, and I plan on displaying that to the fullest."
