Owls in the NFL - Week 5

10.11.21 | Football

Through five weeks in the NFL there is only one undefeated team. Michael Dogbe's (2014-18) Arizona Cardinals stayed perfect with a 17-10 win over San Francisco giving them back-to-back wins over NFC West opponents.

NBC's Sunday Night Football gave the Buffalo Bills a chance to show the country that they are for real as they notched a win at Kansas City, 38-20. Both Dion Dawkins (2013-16) and Tyler Matakevich (2012-15) made contributions to the win. Dawkins helped Buffalo average 8.1 yards per play with 436 total yards and Matakevich tallied two tackles on special teams.

Matt Hennessy (2016-19) and his Atlanta Falcons had a memorable win over the New York Jets, 27-20. The game was played in London and Hennessy was able to get family bragging rights over his brother, Thomas, who is the Jets' long snapper.

Philadelphia had eyes on the matchup between Carolina and the Eagles. Owls' fans refer to the Panthers as "Temple South" due to head coach Matt Rhule (2013-16) and the many Owls on his staff and roster. The Panthers dominated the game with contributions from starters Robby Anderson (2011-13, 2015), Haason Reddick (2012-16), Sean Chandler (2014-17), and backups Sam Franklin (2016-19) and Colin Thompson (2014-16). Anderson chipped in with two catches for 30 yards, Reddick had eight tackles, including back-to-back sacks, Chandler had four tackles and Franklin had three. The play of the game, though, involved the Owl on the Eagles roster as Shaun Bradley (2016-19) recovered a blocked punt in Panthers' territory that the Eagles turned into the winning score, 21-18. Bradley also had two special teams tackles.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers led by Bruce Arians (1983-88) and his staff, aka "Temple Far South," bested the Dolphins, 45-17. They now travel to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles on Thursday Night Football.

Another former Owls' coach, Sean Desai, invaded Las Vegas with his Chicago Bears and shutdown the Raiders, 20-9, holding them to just 259 total yards.

Tavon Young (2012-15) and his Baltimore Ravens erased a 16-point, 4th quarter deficit to win in overtime, 31-25, on Monday Night Football.  Young contributed to the win with a four tackles, including a sack.

Harrison Hand (2019) had a tackle as his Minnesota Vikings beat the Lions, 19-17.

Around the league the following Owls played well in defeat: Brandon McManus (2009-12) was 2-of-2 on field goals for the Denver Broncos; Matt Ioannidis (2012-15) had four tackles for the Washington Football Team; Jacob Martin (2014-17) had one tackle for the Houston Texans; and Quincy Roche (2016-19) nearly had his first career interception for the New York Giants.
