Owls in the NFL - Week 10
11.16.21 | Football
One of the big stories of the week in the NFL was the return of Cam Newton to both the NFL and the Carolina Panthers. The former #1 pick and NFL MVP who was released by the Panthers a year ago, was resigned by Carolina after an injury to Sam Darnold. Newton's return overshadowed two former Owls, but their stories were nevertheless, sensational.
Â
Despite Newton's return, it was our P.J. Walker (2013-16) who started at quarterback and led the Panthers to a 34-10 win at Arizona, who owned the NFL's best record. Walker was 22-29 for 167 passing and 3-6 rushing. He improved his record as a professional to a perfect 7-0 as a starting quarterback (5-0 for the XFL's Houston Roughnecks and 2-0 for the NFL's Panthers). Robby Anderson (2011-13, 2015) caught four balls for 37 yards and a touchdown to help the offense.
Â
Haason Reddick (2012-16) returned to Arizona where he played hist first four NFL seasons and was a complete wrecking ball. He racked up four tackles, including 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble and three quarterback hits. Sean Chandler (2014-17) - two tackles – and Sam Franklin (2016-19) helped lead Matt Rhule's (2013-16) Panthers to the win.
Â
For the Arizona Cardinals, Michael Dogbe (2014-18) totaled four tackles.
Â
There were three other matchups with Owls facing Owls…
Â
In all, 11 seasons of Temple football were on display at Mile High Stadium when Shaun Bradley's (2016-19) Philadelphia Eagles went into Denver to take on Brandon McManus (2009-12) and Nate Hairston (2012-16). Bradley added one special teams tackle to his resume and is now the NFL's leader in that category with 10 stops. McManus scored more than half of his team's 13 points with two field goals and one PAT.
Â
Rock Ya-Sin's (2018) Indianapolis Colts got the best of Chapelle Russell's (2015-19) Jacksonville Jaguars, 23-17. Each player chipped in with a tackle.
Â
Matt Ioannidis (2012-15) and his Washington Football Team avenged a playoff loss from January with a 29-19 win against Bruce Arians' (1983-88) Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Â
Dion Dawkins (2013-16), Tyler Matakevich (2012-15), and the Buffalo Bills went to New York to defeat the Jets, 45-17. Matakevich, like Bradley, is among the NFL's best special teamers adding one stop to his season total of seven special teams tackles, good for seventh in the league.             Â
Harrison Hand (2019) and the Minnesota Vikings went to Los Angeles to beat the Chargers, 27-20.
Â
The Atlanta Falcons' Matt Hennessy (2016-19) and Baltimore Ravens' Tavon Young (2012-15) each started for their respective teams in road losses.
                                              Â
Jacob Martin's (2014-17) Houston Texans and Quincy Roche's (2016-19) New York Giants both had bye weeks.
