Owls in the NFL - Week 9

11.9.21 | Football

Week nine for the Owls in the NFL was magical for some former single-digit wearers of that special number. A few Wild Boyz from the defensive line balled out on Sunday.

No one had a bigger impact than New York Giants' Quincy Roche (2016-19). Making hist first NFL start, it was how Roche finished that mattered most. The rookie had four tackles with the last one being a strip sack of Derek Carr on the Raiders' final offensive play thwarting a potential comeback. The Giants won 23-16.

Jacob Martin (2014-17) and his Houston Texans went to Miami and he too had had a forced fumble to go with three tackles. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as the Texans lost 17-9.

Michael Dogbe (2014-18) and his Arizona Cardinals continue to roll as he contributed one tackle in a 31-17 win. The Cardinals own the NFL's best record at 8-1.

Eight of the NFL's first nine weeks have started off with a Temple Owl on the NFL's Thursday Night Football showcase. This past week included Rock Ya-Sin (2018) and the Indianapolis Colts. Ya-Sin had five tackles and nearly picked off a pass in the Colts' 45—30 win over the Jets.

There was a pretty even match up held in Baltimore as the Ravens faced the Vikings. Both teams had a former Owl cornerback - Minnesota's Harrison Hand (2019) and Baltimore's Tavon Young (2012-15) – both wore purple, and both had 31 points at the end of regulation. Young had two tackles to Hand's one and his team won in overtime, 34-31.

In another matchup, the focus for most of the game's audience was on how one Josh Allen played against another Josh Allen. It was quite a day for the Jaguars' Allen (INT, sack, fumble recovery). Owl Nation had a rooting interest on both sides as well with Dion Dawkins (2013-16) and Tyler Matakevich (2012-15) of the Bills facing Jacksonville's Chapelle Russell (2015-19). Russell and his Jaguars got the win, 9-6.

Brandon McManus (2009-12) and Nate Hairston (2012-16) led their Denver Broncos into Dallas and beat up on the Cowboys, 30-16. McManus scored 10 points (3 FGs and one PAT) and Hairston received extended action at corner adding one tackle and one pass defensed.

Matt Hennessy's (2016-19) improvement coincides with his Falcons as they won their fourth game in the last six contests, 27-25, at New Orleans.

Shaun Bradley's (2016-19) Eagles lost a close one at home against the Chargers, 27-24. Bradley continues to be a standout on Philadelphia's special teams with two stops and is now tied for second in the NFL with nine special teams tackles.

Carolina's Matt Rhule (2013-16) and his group of former Owls - Robby Anderson (2011-13, 2015), Colin Thompson (2014-16), Haason Reddick (2012-16), Sam Franklin (2016-19) and Sean Chandler (2014-17) – had a tough time with New England, losing 24-6.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Bruce Arians (1983-88) and staff – and Washington Football Team - Matt Ioannidis (2012-15) – each had bye weeks.
