12.2.21 | General
PHILADELPHIA –Temple University's athletics continues to set records for academic success with the release of the latest Graduation Success Rate (GSR) by the NCAA. Data released today shows that Temple University student-athletes posted a 93 percent Graduation Success Rate, breaking the old school mark of 91 set last year (2020). It also marks the seventh straight year of an overall GSR of 85 or greater.
"One of the most important things a university and athletic department does is to graduate its students, so we take great pride in being among the best in the nation in this area," said Vice President/Director of Athletics Arthur Johnson. "I would like to commend and thank Justin Miller and his talented staff at the Nancy & Donald Resnick Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes as well as our student-athletes for their hard work and our coaches for their commitment to winning in the classroom as well as on the field."
Temple Highlights from the data released:
> Temple's overall GSR number is tied for 20th among all Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools. Temple also placed second among American Athletic Conference schools behind only Memphis (94 GSR).
> Seven Temple athletics programs – Men's Basketball, Field Hockey, Women's Lacrosse, Women's Rowing, Women's Soccer, Men's Tennis, and Women's Volleyball – posted perfect 100 GSRs with men's tennis accomplishing this feat for 12 straight years.
> Men's Basketball and Women's Rowing posted the only two perfect GSR programs for their respective sports in the American Athletic Conference.
> Temple Men's Basketball is also only one of three programs in all of Division 1 with perfect GSR and Federal Graduation Rate (La Salle, Princeton, Temple).
> The average GSR from Temple's Men's Basketball, Football, and Women's Basketball programs (93.67) is tied for 19th amongst all full members of FBS conferences.
> Temple Football posted a record GSR of 89, which is tied for 23rd amongst FBS programs. Football also is tied for the second highest GSR in the American Athletic Conference, again behind the University of Memphis (90).
> Ten of Temple's 17 programs ranked within the Top 4 of their respective conferences: Field Hockey (1-t), Football (2), Men's Basketball (1), Men's Golf (4-t), Men's Soccer (3), Men's Tennis (1-t), Women's Lacrosse (1-t), Women's Rowing (1), Women's Soccer (1-t), Women's Volleyball (1-t).
"The public release of data like the NCAA's Graduation Success Rate serves as another example of Temple University's commitment to delivering on its promise to its student-athletes. Through a culture of earned academic excellence and significant effort, Temple's student-athletes continue to make us all very proud," said Miller. "With the outstanding support from the Office of the Provost, Temple's faculty, Athletics administration and coaches, the staff of the Resnick Center are fully empowered to support each student-athlete through graduation and beyond. From graduate rates to grade point averages, none of this is possible without the collaboration and support from our entire community."
The NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) is designed to reflect the proportion of student-athletes on any given team who earn a college degree within a six-year window of their initial enrollment. The GSR was developed in response to colleges and universities who asked for an alternative rate that more accurately reflects the movement among college student-athletes. The GSR takes into account incoming transfers who graduate from a different institution than the one they started at and transfers who leave an institution in good standing.
