Getting to Know: D'Wan Mathis

2.1.21 | Football

D'Wan Mathis joins the Owls from the University of Georgia and Oak Park, Michigan. Mathis spent two seasons as a part of the Bulldogs under coach Kirby Smart.

The former four-star recruit had to redshirt his freshman season due to an emergency surgery to remove a cyst from his brain. He later won the David Jacobs Award (overcoming injury) at the teams end of season awards.

He made his first career start for the Bulldogs earning the 2020 opening day assignment against Arkansas where he completed 17 passes. Mathis entered the transfer portal midway through the 2020 season and ultimately found his way to Temple. "I was familiar with Coach Carey's system from NIU, and that was a style I wanted to play within," explained Mathis.

Football was far from the only point of interest that drew Mathis to North Philadelphia. "Knowing that Temple was such a great academic institution was great," said Mathis, who studies psychology.

In addition, Mathis is very excited about what the city has to offer. "The way Philly is, it's just great" said Mathis. "I know and love that I will be able to build relationships with my teammates here."

College quarterbacks are often classified as a scrambler, dual-threat or pro-style triggerman. Mathis doesn't want to worry about any type of label but instead just be a playmaker. "When an important situation comes into my hands, I just know I can make plays," he said.

Mathis is a very team-oriented player, the focus is not his individual goals but always putting the team first. "I want fans and my teammates to know that I came here to win and to give back to the community" explained Mathis. "I am a team guy both on and off the field."

Putting community and team first are values that are a must for a team that is plugged into Philadelphia. While he has only been on campus for a matter of weeks, Mathis already embodies the Temple University mindset.
