UCF Downs Women's Soccer, 3-0

2.14.21 | Women's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – The debut of the Nick Bochette Era of Temple women's soccer (0-1, 0-1 AAC) was not a storybook one as the Owls fell to perennial American Athletic Conference power, UCF, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at the Temple Sports Complex.

The Cherry and White put up a tough fight in its season opener against Knights (1-0, 1-0) with Delaware transfer Kamryn Stablein playing strong in goal in stopping seven shots.

How it Happened
> An early goal by UCF midfielder Katie Bradley put the Knights on top just two minutes into the game. Trescott Shamlou and Madison Murnin followed up with two other shots on goal, both going wide.
> The first scoring attempt from the Owls came in the 21st minute by defender Roisin McGovern, but her shot sailed high above the crossbar.
> Stabelin had made her first save in the 28th minute, blocking a shot from the Knights' top scorer last season, Kristen Scott.
> Freshman defender Brooke Kane, making her first collegiate start, had a shot on goal in the 34th minute.
> UCF closed out the half with another goal in the 37th minute as Mallory Olsson finished a beautiful pass from Scott in the box.
> The Knights continued to pressure to kick off the second half with shots by Ellie Moreno and Darya Rajaee.
> A defensive play by Stabelin in the 47th minute started what would be an impressive showing by the junior goalkeeper as she followed it up with a diving save in the top left corner to keep the Owls within two in the 56th minute.
> Stablein's momentum continued with a huge save in the 59th minute and from point blank two minutes later.
> Olsson would go on to net her second goal of the game in the 72nd minute to close out the scoring.
> Senior defender Marissa DiGenova tried to rally the Owls at the end with two shots on goal, but UCF goalkeeper Caroline DeLisle was up to the challenge.

From the Coach
> "Against a team of this caliber, it's always going to be hard to have 60 percent possession against them," said Bochette. "Some of our biggest learning experiences from this will be when we go toe-to-toe with good teams and we play a good 40 minutes of soccer like we did in the first half, we have to get something out of it. What we're seeing is a lot of growth, a lot of positives and learning where we need to be better.

Up Next
> The Owls make a short trip to Villanova this Thursday, Feb. 18, before a trip down south to face USF on Sunday, Feb. 21. The conference matchup is set for 1 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
