Women's Tennis Faces FDU on Sunday in Season Opener

PHILADELPHIA — Temple women's tennis will open their 2020-21 spring season at home, hosting Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) at the Cherry Hill Racquet Club on Sunday, Feb. 21 at 11 a.m.

The Owls
> Temple is led by Head Coach Steve Mauro in his 14th season with the women's tennis program.
> The Owls' top returners include Stefaniya Surikova, Oleksandra Doroshenko, Cecilia Castelli, Oyku Boz and Yining Tian.
> A handful of newcomers join the team this year with much international experience under their belt. Freshmen Vineetha Mummadi, Sena Takebe, Ling Hsuan Wei and Miu Yabuta look to make an impact in their first collegiate season.
> Temple started the 2019-20 season going 5-6 before a season cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
> Temple has won six consecutive matches against FDU, dating back to the 2014-15 season. Their last meeting saw Temple win 5-2 in Feb. 2020.

 
Scouting FDU
> FDU is led by head coach Jeff Brandes who has coached the Knights since 2016.
> Prior to the season cancellation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, FDU went  5-4  during the 2019-20 season.
> Key returners for FDU this season include sophomore Alena Kubanova and Shreya Gulia. Both Kubanova and Gulia reached the ITA Regionals in singles competition.
> Kubanova totaled six NEC honors during her freshman campaign in 2020. She tied junior Smirti Singh for leading the team with 15 singles victories.
> FDU welcomes one newcomer to the team, Gauri Bhagia hailing from Mumbai, India. Bhagia has achieved an ITF high rank of 508.
