Turnovers Prove Costly in Men’s Basketball’s 63-60 Loss to Cincinnati

2.4.21 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - In a tightly-contested game throughout, turnovers proved to be the difference as Cincinnati defeated Temple, 63-60, Thursday night at the Liacouras Center.  The Owls (4-6, 3-6 AAC) tied a season-high with 19 miscues, including three in the final minute allowing the Bearcats (4-7, 2-4 AAC) to take the road win.

Damian Dunn led three double-figure scorers for Temple with 16 points. Jeremiah Williams added 13 points with Khalif Battle chipping in 10.

Cincinnati's David DeJulius led all scorers with 26 points while Keith Williams added 15 points and Jeremiah Davenport added 14.

Recapping the Game
First Half
> The game started off sluggishly for both teams. Temple turned the ball over eight times over the first eight minutes, but led 9-8 as Cincinnati made only 3-of-14 field goal attempts.
> Defense was the mainstay as both teams struggled to get on track offensively in a back and forth contest.
> Temple went on a mini five-point run as De'Vondre Perry hit a three with Battle following with a driving layup.  That made for the game's first two possession lead, 19-14
> Cincinnati answered with 10 straight, five from Davenport, to open up its own five-point lead, 24-19.
> The Owls went cold over the last six minutes, making only one basket on eight attempts, while the Bearcats closed with a six of the final eight points to take the largest lead of the half at intermission, 31-23.

Second Half
> Temple cut away at the lead early, making it a five point game twice, before a DeJulius three made it 40-32 at the first media timeout.
> The Owls' top frontcourt player, Jake Forrester, who picked up two quick fouls in the first half was whistled for his third and fourth over the first three minutes and change.
> Temple cut the margin to three, 40-37, as J.P. Moorman II drained a three and Battle made a steal and dished it to Williams for a fast break layup.
> Two Dunn free throws drew the Owls to within one and a Williams three completed a 10-0 run to lift Temple to a 42-40 lead.
> The Cherry and White held the visitors scoreless for five and a half minutes before a layup by Mason Madsen tied the contest at 42 with 10:09 remaining.
> Cincinnati would run off 12 of the next 15 points with a Davenport three-pointer and DeJulius steal and layup providing the Bearcats with a 56-51 lead with just over four minutes remaining.
> A Forrester basket and Williams three one minute later tied the contest with three minutes remaining.
> Cincinnati's defense then held the Owls to one field goal over the remainder of the game while the Bearcats made their final two shots, and converted two of four free throws in the final 30 seconds to hold on for the victory.

Statistically Speaking
> Williams, who dished 17 assists over the last two games, was held without one in the contest.
> Moorman tied Davenport for a game-leading seven rebounds.
