PHILADELPHIA—Temple women's soccer begins a new era this season as the team looks to rebound from its 2019 campaign. Making his Temple coaching debut, Head Coach Nick Bochette hopes to lead the Cherry and White to greatness this year.

The Owls finished the 2019 season 5-9-5 (AAC 2-5-2) but unfortunately had spring play canceled due to COVID-19. Because of the ongoing nature of the pandemic, the Owls will be playing a condensed season this year, consisting of eight conference and four non-conference matchups. While the season looks a little bit different, the team's expectations remain the same.

"Training and playing in winter comes with its own unique challenges but the reality is, we are required to find a way to be at our best regardless of the weather," Bochette said. "We've been really impressed by the energy and enthusiasm of the playing staff this winter. There's been some outright frigid days out here, but you'd never know it with how they've gone about their work. The student-athletes have been extraordinary."

This year's team is captained by seniors Julia Dolan and Arryana Daniels and junior Kamryn Stablein, a trio that Bochette believes embodies the passion, energy, and leadership needed to lead the team to victory.

"Julia is someone whose tenacity, maturity, and authenticity is unmistakable to everyone around her," Bochette said. "Arryana embodies all the characteristics of the modern student-athlete and modern leader. She is an excellent student, a top player, and an elite teammate. Kamryn, although new to our program, has quickly become an essential core of our whole group. Her professionalism, drive, and good-natured enthusiasm will be vital to the evolution of our team and our program."

Alongside its captains, the program looks to showcase a wide variety of talent among its athletes with a strong balance between the team's veterans and newcomers.

"We have a fantastic mix of experience and youth in our group this year," Bochette said. "Our program veterans have really challenged themselves to add new dimensions to their game to drive this team forward. We've also had some experienced transfer student-athletes who have benefited from their previous experiences and have really fit in well into the group while adding maturity and intention. Add in the new group of freshmen who bring excitement and ambition of youth to our team and we're just really excited to see how they will challenge the status quo of this level."

Last year's top scorers, Hailey Gutowski and Gabriela Johnson, look to lead the attack alongside Emma Wilkins, Lexy Endres, and Emily Kavanaugh. Defensively, Marissa DiGenova, Daniels, and Djavon Dupree are slated to make an impact and play big roles throughout the season while adding freshman Róisín McGovern to the mix.

The Owls open the 2020-21 season this Sunday, Feb. 7 where they will take on city foe, Saint Joseph's, at 1 p.m. at Sweeney Field. The game will be watchable on ESPN+.
