Gymnastics Closes Regular Season with Two Meets at Towson

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple gymnastics team goes on the road for the final weekend of the regular season, competing in a pair of meets at Towson. On Friday, the Owls will square off against the host Tigers and George Washington at 6:00 p.m. and on Sunday, the 4:00 p.m. meet becomes a quad, with the addition of the University of New Hampshire.
OWL ABOUT TEMPLE
Heading into the final week of the regular season, the Owls are ranked 41st in the NQS. Temple's score rose to 195.044 backed by a season-best 195.400 on Sunday. Last year at this time, the Owls were 48th with an NQS of 194.155, almost a full point lower than where the team is this season. Temple's outstanding floor rotation is now ranked 21st in the nation with an NQS of 49.250. The team has also improved to 34th in the country on vault (48.906) and 36th on beam (48.944).
Five Owls are ranked in the top-10 in the EAGL, led by junior Julianna Roland and freshman Brooke Donabedian, who both appear in two rankings. Roland is fifth on floor (9.863) and seventh on vault (9.838), while Donabedian sits seventh on both beam (9.838) and floor (9.856). Senior Faith Leary is second on floor (9.881) and junior Ariana Castrence is fifth on vault (9.844). As a team, Temple is tops in the EAGL on floor (49.250) and third on vault (48.906).
LAST TIME ON THE FLOOR: W vs. LIU, 195.400 - 191.050
Temple sent its six seniors out in style, as the Owls recorded a season-high 195.400 to top visiting LIU (191.050) in dual meet action on Sunday at McGonigle Hall. Temple ended the meet with two great rotations to pick up a season best 195.400, the fourth best score in program history.
Temple swept all five event titles, led by junior Ariana Castrence who picked up three. She won the all-around with a 39.325, adding a 9.850 to win vault and a 9.875 to tie for the win on floor. Other event winners for the Owls were freshmen Brooke Donabedian (BB - 9.850) and Cyrena Whalen (UB - 9.850), and junior Julianna Roland and Edwards, who tied Castrence for the floor title with 9.875's.
SCOUTING TOWSON
Towson has climbed to #31 in the national rankings with an NQS of 195.756, which also ranks second in the EAGL. The Tigers excel on vault, where the team is first in the EAGL and 28th in the nation with a 49.00. Towson is also second in the conference in bars (49.050) and beam (49.044). Last weekend, Tigers put up two scores of 195 or better in a two-meet week. On Friday they scored a 195.550 to place second at Temple against the Owls and GW. On Sunday, they fell to GW with a team score of 195.050.
Individually, Lauren Bolen is ranked second in the EAGL All-Around standings (39.113), while also ranking third on vault (9.863). Camille Vitoff is first in the conference on vault (9.875) while Emerson Hurst is second on beam (9.900).
SCOUTING GEORGE WASHINGTON
George Washington has come on strong, moving up to 46th in the NQS rankings, after posting a pair of high 195's last weekend. On Friday, the Colonials hit a season-best mark to win a Temple tri-meet, going 195.700. On Sunday, they nearly matched that, going 195.675 to top Towson in a dual meet.
Deja Chambliss owns top scores for GW on both vault (9.900) and bars (9.850), while also putting up a 9.900 on floor this year. Rookie Kendall Whitman set a program record with a 9.950 on floor earlier this season, and also has top scores for GW on beam (9.825) and vault (9.875).
SOUTING UNH
UNH has jumped to 37th in the national rankings with an NQS of 195.419. The Wildcats erased a 193.675 in style last weekend, scoring a 196.125 in a home dual win over NC State. UNH is ranked 37th in the nation on both bars (48.888) and beam (48.938).
Individually for UNH, Robyn Kelley and Kylie Gorgenyi both rank in the top five in the EAGL in two events. Kelley is second on floor with a 9.881 and third on beam with a 9.881. Gorgenyi ranks fourth in the all-around with a 38.919 and is fifth on vault with a 9.844. Hailey Lui rounds out the rankings for UNH sitting fourth on beam with a 9.875.
ARI THE ALL-AROUND QUEEN
Temple's Ariana Castrence solidified her place in the Owls' record book by breaking her own All-Around mark on March 5. The junior scored a 39.350, improving her own program-best mark of 39.275, which she set last season.
Castrence's feat was even more impressive, as she only returned to the all-around on February 21. She missed nearly six months of training due to gym closures because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
