Men’s Soccer Overcomes Injuries to Earn 0-0 Draw with Tulsa
3.14.21 | Men's Soccer
TULSA, Okla. – Playing without three starters for most of the match the Temple men's soccer team (2-3-1, 2-3-1 AAC) salvaged a scoreless tie at the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (2-2-1, 2-2-1 AAC) for its first draw of the season. Despite 110 minutes of game time, neither squad could find the back of the net to secure the win. This marks the first time Temple has shutout conference opponents in back-to-back games since 2016.
How it Happened
> Tulsa started the match with two shots from Alex Meinhard, the first missed the target. The second came in low and was saved by goalkeeper Eion Gawronski.
> Soon after, Amir Cohen fired Temple's lone shot on goal to the bottom right corner where it was saved by Tulsa goalkeeper Lucas Cline.
> Within the first 15 minutes of the match the Owls sustained two major losses. Defenders Mickael Borger and Santiago Majewski were both sidelined due to injury. This was in addition to fellow backliner Brandon Johnson being sidelined due to a red card from the previous game.
> Despite the depleted roster, Temple stood strong. The Owls did not allow a shot on goal for a nearly 30 minutes stretch of the first half.
> Eion Gawronski made back-to-back saves within a minute and a half to keep the sheet clean.
> As the second half began it was clear the Temple defense would not allow quality chances. The Golden Hurricane did not get a shot on target until over 30 minutes into the half.
> Gawronski saved a bouncer from Tulsa with ease for his fourth save of the match.
> The Owl backline held strong in the last 15 minutes of regulation, once again not allowing only two off-target Tulsa shots.
> Tulsa had a final spurt in the first overtime period, firing two shots on goal. However, both were saved as Gawronski sealed his second consecutive clean sheet.
> The second overtime saw Temple counter with a chance from Fabian Grant. Neither team place a shot on net. The final score was zero all.
Game Notes
> This match saw several Owls place new season highs in minutes played. Paul Frendach, Elias Hellgren Villegas, Nigel Griffith, Jimi Leder, Daniel Nugent, and Lior Nesher were among the Owls who set new season or career highs in minutes played.
> Despite Tulsa shooting the ball 22 times, the Temple defense allowed only six on target. The 27% on target rate is by far the least allowed this season.
> Three yellow cards were issued in this match, two on Temple and one on Tulsa.
> With his clean sheet today, Gawronski (6 saves) has not yet allowed a goal two and a half games into his collegiate career.
From the Coach
> "I couldn't have been more proud to be this team's coach today. To be down three starters in the first 15 minutes of this game against a very good Tulsa team on the road. An absolute championship performance from the guys they played their socks off, and credit to them. Everyone who was called upon did amazing." -- head coach Brian Rowland.
