Men’s Soccer Faces UCF in Pivotal AAC Matchup

3.19.21 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA- The Temple men's soccer team travels to Orlando,  Fla. Saturday for an enormous conference battle with UCF. Both sides are in a very crowded race to qualify for the American Athletic Conference tournament, with only two points separating them. The 6 p.m. match will be broadcast live on ESPN+ from the UCF Soccer & Track Complex.

THE OWL POST
> The Owls overcame numerous early match injuries to force a 0-0 draw against Tulsa last week.
> Eoin Gawronski has been solid in net since taking over at halftime against USF three weeks ago. He has not yet allowed a goal and became the first Temple goalkeeper with back-to-back clean sheets in conference play since 2016 with his shutout against Tulsa last week.
> Mike Eijgendaal, Amir Cohen, and Jalen Campbell are tied for the team lead in goals with two.
> Eijgendaal and Sean Karani lead the team in assists, also with two.
> Pierre Cayet has proved deserving of his Preseason Conference Defensive Player of the Year award. The senior has won back-to-back AAC Defensive Player of the Week awards for his play.

LAST TIME OUT : TEMPLE 0, @ TULSA 0
> Temple played the Tulsa Golden Hurricane to a 0-0 draw.
> Within the first 15 minutes of the match the Owls sustained two major losses. Defenders Mickael Borger and Santiago Majewski were both sidelined due to injury. This was in addition to fellow backliner Brandon Johnson being sidelined due to a red card from the previous game.
> The Temple defense stood strong in the face of adversity, with two separate periods of over 30 minutes where Tulsa could not get a shot on goal. Only 27 percent of Tulsa's shots found their target.
> Several Owls placed new season highs in minutes played. Paul Frendach, Elias Hellgren Villegas, Nigel Griffith, Jimi Leder, Daniel Nugent, and Lior Nesher were among the Owls who set new season or career highs in minutes played.

SCOUTING UCF
> UCF was ranked 14 in the preseason TopDrawerSoccer poll.
> The Knights proceeded to lose three of their first four matches but have won their last two to get to 3-3 on the season and receive votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll.
> Last week the Knights earned a huge win over No. 9 SMU 2-0 to climb to third in the American.
> Goalkeeper Yannick Oettl has been an absolute standout for the Knights. The Senior won AAC Goalkeeper of the Week for his shutout against SMU last week. He trails only Temple's Eoin Gawronski in save percentage with 85.7%.

SERIES HISTORY vs. UCF
> Temple and UCF are meeting for the  10th time in series history. UCF leads with a record of 5-2-2.
> Earlier this season the two met on a rain-soaked freezing day. The No. 14 Knights prevailed 1-0.
