Crew Announces 2021 Schedule

3.24.21 | Men's Crew

PHILADELPHIA -- After a long offseason with no fall races, the 2021 Temple men's crew team will finally get back on the water for its first competition in over a year next Saturday with Temple's very own Murphy Cup Regatta.

The last time the Owls raced as a team was all the way back on October 27, 2019 at the Princeton Chase. That was the final competition of the fall season while the spring 2020 campaign was canceled due to COVID-19.

"We are very excited to get back on the water," noted Temple crew head coach Brian Perkins. "It is no secret that we have not competed competitively in over a year, but I am confident that our squads will shake off the rust and regain our form from the past few seasons."

This year's Murphy Cup will see a smaller field racing as the Owls will be competing against fellow Philadelphia schools Drexel, Penn, and La Salle on April 3.

"The Murphy Cup will look a bit different this year with the lack of competitors compared to past years," said Perkins. "But the teams that are racing this year have quality boats and student-athletes that challenge us year-in and year-out, so I am looking forward to seeing how our boats stack up."

The following weekend, the heavyweight and lightweight squads split up as the heavyweights make a west coast trip to Mission Bay in San Diego, Calif. to race against the University of San Diego and the University of California San Diego on April 10. The same day, the lightweight squad will attempt to protect their home turf against the Navy Midshipmen and the Penn Quakers.

"Last year's trip out to San Diego obviously was canceled due to COVID-19, so it has been a while since we have traveled out to San Diego," mentioned Perkins. "However, the last time we were out there, we were able to win a pair of gold medals so hopefully we are able to repeat that performance this season. On the other hand, the lightweights will get a great opportunity to race on the Schuylkill against some quality boats."

The heavyweights and lightweights will reconvene on April 17 for the 54th annual Kerr Cup Regatta, before parting ways once again as the heavyweights travel to Overpeck, N.Y. to take on Holy Cross and Marist on April 24. The next day, the lightweights take a quick two and a half hour in-state drive for races against the Bucknell Bison and the Mercyhurst Lakers.

To open the month of May, the Cherry and White welcome city schools Drexel, La Salle, Penn and Saint Joseph's on May 1.

Both crews will be back on the Schuylkill the following weekend for the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta. Races will run Friday, May 7 and Saturday, May 8.

The IRA National Championships will wrap up the 2021 season, with the event being held in Mercer, N.J. on Friday, May 28 and Saturday, May 29.
