Women’s Soccer Evens Record With 1-0 Win at NJIT

3.7.21 | Women's Soccer

NEWARK, N.J. – Junior Hailey Gutowski scored the game's lone goal and Temple's defense came up with big plays as the Owls defeated host NJIT, 1-0, Sunday at Mal Simon Stadium.  The Owls evened their mark at 2-2-1 while the Highlanders fall to 2-1.

How it Happened
> NJIT came out strong offensively with three shots between the 3rd and 6th minutes, but none would find the back of the goal as Kamryn Stablein made the two saves.
> Hailey Gutowski looked to put the Owls on the board early on with a shot in the 7th minute, but NJIT goalkeeper Molly Saylor would earn her first save of the game.
> Gutowski and Lexy Endres both fired shots 10 minutes later with each missing the mark.
> The remainder of the first half would prove to be a competitive, evenly matched contest between the Highlanders and Owls, resulting in a scoreless first 45 minutes.
> Teri Jackson would enter the game for the first time in the second half and immediately fired a shot that would hit the crossbar in the 48th minute.
> Jackson's shot was followed up by attempts from Julia Dolan and Emily Kavanaugh, but Temple still struggled to find the back of the net.
> In the 54th minute, the Highlanders looked to put themselves on the board as Christine Conaghy caught Stablein off guard, opening the goal, but defender Marissa DiGenova came in with the last minute save.
> A header from Arryana Daniels and shot from Gabriella Johnson were both saved by Saylor in the 62nd minute.
> The difference maker came in the 78th minute when Emma Wilkins set up the perfect pass for Gutowski to capitalize on, putting the Owls up, 1-0.
> Johnson looked to add to the Owls' lead on numerous occasions in the 83rd and 85th minutes, but Saylor added two more saves to her game total.
> NJIT's Jennifer Callaghan looked to send the game into overtime with mere seconds left, but Roisin McGovern made a defensive save as time expired to preserve the win.
