Field Hockey Dominates La Salle in Regular Season Finale

4.15.21 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple field hockey team closed out the regular season with a bang, defeating La Salle 4-0 Thursday afternoon. With the with, the Owls are 8-9 (4-8 BIG EAST) to surpass last season's win total of seven and tie last season's number of shutouts (five).

Recapping the Game
> The Owls jumped out early, with Veronika Novakova scoring her fourth of the season off a penalty corner at the nine-minute mark.
> The second quarter was quiet, with both teams combining for just four shots with two on goal.
> Temple came out of halftime on fire, scoring back-to-back goals in the first three minutes of the third quarter. Kerrie Lorenz scored off a penalty corner while Taylor Alba scored on a pass from Lorenz.
> The Cherry and White put the game away in the fourth quarter, as Natalie McNamara passed to Alba for her third goal of the season.

Statistically Speaking
> Temple outshot the Explorers 15-6, putting nine on frame.
> The Owls allowed just three penalty corners, successfully defending all of them, to tie for their season-low.
> Alba fired a team-leading six shots, with Lorenz attempting three and Novakova attempting two. Four other Owls fired one shot each.
> Freshman Molly Frey made her first appearance in the cage, recording two of Temple's four saves.
> Temple's four goals are the most scored in a game since 2016.

Quotable
> "It's always a nice day when we're able to play a lot of our young players. La Salle came out very strong in the first half, which we assumed they would. We were happy to get on the board and hold the lead into halftime, but we had to pick up our energy and defensive intent for the remainder of the game. I'm impressed by the quick turnaround to get things started in the third quarter. We are truly just hitting our stride. Our upperclassmen have been playing out of their minds knowing their time is running out. It's nice to end the regular season with a win as we wait to see what happens for our BIG EAST Tournament fate." – Temple head coach Susan Ciufo

Next Up
> The Owls await their BIG EAST Tournament fate, with a pair of games against Old Dominion and Providence this weekend to decide the remaining seed. Temple needs an Old Dominion sweep to advance to the tournament next week.
