PHILADELPHIA – The Wuerffel Trophy, College Football's Premier Award for Community Service, today announced its 93-player watch list. Temple quarterback Re-al Mitchell was among the group of student-athletes nominated for the prestigious award.
Throughout last season, Mitchell used his time off the field wisely, participating in a variety of community service events totaling over three dozen hours. Mitchell used this time to develop a relationship with Jaidyn from TEAM IMPACT, as well as participate in physical education classes with elementary school children with the Camden Promise Academy. Among many other community service events, Mitchell worked in conjunction with the Temple Police to service a block around campus as part of a cleanup effort.
Another of the ways he's trying to help is by introducing his teammates to better mental health awareness. He has started regular meetings under the acronym R.A.I.S.E. – Raising Awareness in Student-athletes' mental health Everywhere.
"It's an organization that I wanted to start about mental health. These days you see guys talking about it on social media. We meet once a week and I'll have a slide presentation to get a dialogue started. We have on average 7-10 guys at each session, and it continues to grow."
Established in 2005, the Wuerffel Trophy honors college football players who serve others, celebrate their impact, and inspire greater service in the world. A member of the National College Football Awards Association, the Wuerffel Trophy is presented annually to the FBS player who best combined exemplary community service with leadership achievement on and off the field. It is the first major award honoring the character of service to others.
The Wuerffel Trophy is named after Heisman Trophy winner, College Football Hall of Famer, former NFL quarterback, and renowned humanitarian Danny Wuerffel, whose life mission is to inspire greater service in the world.
Semifinalists for the award will be announced on November 2 and finalists will be announced November 22. The formal announcement of the 2021 recipient will be made on December 9 and the presentation of the 2021 Wuerffel Trophy will occur in February 2022 in Fort Walton Beach.
