Women’s Soccer Names 2021 Season Captains

8.16.21 | Women's Soccer

Head Coach Nick Bochette announced early this week that Kamryn Stablein, Marissa DiGenova and Róisín McGovern have been named captains for the 2021 Temple women's soccer team.

"One of the hallmarks of a successful program is strong internal leadership. With Kamryn as a returning captain and Marissa and Roísín establishing themselves as known and respected leaders, I know that this core group can lead from the inside. It is really important that you build a team culture that values the work that leads to excellence and these three are the perfect embodiment of that."

Stablein, a senior goalkeeper from Orwigsburg, Pa., enters her second year as a captain for the Owls. Stablein joined the team in 2020 as a transfer student from the University of Delaware. The goalkeeper wasted no time, starting in all 10 games for the Cherry and White and recorded 60 saves to lead the conference in the regular season. She finished the year with a .800 save percentage, three shutouts and a 1.477 GAA. She was named AAC Goalkeeper of the Week twice for her outstanding efforts.

"Kam is not only a very impressive athlete, but an impressive leader, teammate and person. She brings energy and enthusiasm to everything that she does while lifting her teammates up and challenging them at the same time. It's a trait that you don't find in many and it is the reason she was selected as a captain shortly after transferring in last year. Since day one, Kam made an immediate impact on our team and continues to do so day after day."

DiGenova, a graduate student from King of Prussia, Pa., enters her fifth season as a member of the women's soccer program. The defender will utilize her additional year of eligibility that was granted to student-athletes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. DiGenova, one of the most seasoned veterans on the team has anchored the back line in 61 games for the Cherry and White, recording 4,286 minutes played and 49 career starts.

"While Marissa was not officially named a captain last year, she was very much a leader on this team. Marissa has been a paradigm of growth, development and leadership for the year and a half that I have been with the Owls. Her sacrifice for this team and willingness to succeed every day is what makes her so great."

Roísín McGovern a sophomore from Dublin, Ireland, enters her second season as an Owl. McGovern wasted no time in her rookie debut, starting in all ten games of the condensed season. The defender notched two goals, nailing the equalizer in the draw against East Carolina (2/28) and the first goal in the 2-0 win over Tulsa (3/28). McGovern was recognized as AAC Rookie of the Week twice after these showings.

"Similar to Kam, Roísín came into our program and made an immediate impact on day one. As an international student, she adjusted to the American college system and became a known leader instantaneously. Roísín is one of those players that understands how to unite a team. She trains competitively day in and day out, pushing her peers to the next level, but also knows how to form the relationships that it takes to become a successful and respected leader. Being a younger player has not been a barrier for her because she has exactly what it takes to be in this role, and she has shown us just that."

With a group of promising leaders at the forefront of the women's soccer squad, the Cherry and White eagerly await the season opener on Thursday, August 19 at University of Maryland.
