Women’s Soccer Opens 2021 Season at Maryland Thursday

8.17.21 | Women's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's soccer is ready for action this fall after facing an untraditional year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the postponement of fall competition in 2020, head coach Nick Bochette and the Owls navigated through the program's first-ever spring season. The Owls will open up their 2021  campaign on Thursday, Aug. 19  at Maryland. Temple will take to the pitch against the Terps at 7 p.m. in College Park, Md.

The Owls finished the condensed 2020-21 spring season with a 4-5-1 record, going 2-5-1 in the American Athletic Conference. Entering his second year at the helm, Bochette is looking to build upon the groundwork that he began to lay last spring.

"We want to take a big step forward from where we were last year, and we believe we can do just that," Bochette said. "We expect to compete and have a chance to win every game we play this year, regardless of the quality of our opponent. We laid the groundwork to become a more dynamic attacking team and hope to continue to evolve."

Despite the unconventional back-to-back transition from spring competition to fall competition, Bochette and the team are excited to be back on the field with a sense of familiarity.

"I think there is a general sense of relief that we are getting to prepare for a more normal season," he said. "Uncertainty swirled around everything we did last year, and I think that the team is enjoying the known quantity that is a traditional preseason and in-season. Obviously, we are aware that things can change rapidly, but for the time being, everyone in the program is really excited to be preparing for a full fall season."

This year's team is captained by graduate student Marissa DiGenova, senior Kamryn Stablein, and sophomore Róisín McGovern. This group has shown incredible resilience, leadership, and tenacity throughout their time as Owls — particularly over the course of this past year.

DiGenova, a graduate student, returns as one of the most seasoned veterans on the team.  The defender enters her fifth season as a member of the Temple women's soccer family, utilizing her extra year of eligibility that was granted to student-athletes in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. With 61 career games played, DiGenova will look to anchor the backline for the Owls in her final go-around.

Stablein, a senior goalkeeper for the Cherry and White joined the Owls in 2020 as a transfer student from Delaware. In her first season as an Owl, Stablein started in all 10 games, recording 60 saves, a 0.800 save percentage, three shutouts, and a 1.47 GAA. Stablein finished the regular season first in saves and second in saves per game across the conference. She was named AAC Goalkeeper of the Week twice for her efforts.

McGovern, a native of Dublin, Ireland, enters her second season for the Owls.  The rookie defender had a standout season, starting in all ten games and helping to anchor the backline and provide an offensive push for the Cherry and White. McGovern tallied two goals, earning AAC Rookie of the Week awards honors twice in her freshman debut.

Alongside the captains, the Owls bring back two talented veterans who will be integral to the team's success. Seniors Gabriela Johnson and Hailey Gutowski have proved to be an offensive force for the Cherry and White. Johnson has tallied 27 points on 10 goals and seven assists throughout her career while Gutowski trails Johnson just slightly with 22 career points off of nine goals and four assists.

Graduate transfer Erin Theiller and freshmen Phoebe Hollin and Moa Andersson will add an exciting new element to the 2021 squad. Theiller joins the Owls from Binghamton where she was a four-year starter and two-year captain for the Bearcats. Theiller received First Team All-Conference honors and a spot on the All-Championship team in her senior campaign. Hollin and Andersson join the team as international students. Hollin, a native of Oldham, England, and Andersson, a native of Valbo, Sweden, look to add a competitive edge and a new and exciting element to the American game.

The Owls will begin non-conference play against Maryland on Thursday, Aug. 19 as they travel to College Park, Md. for the 2021 season opener.
