Gawronski Makes Second Straight Overtime Penalty Kick Save as Men’s Soccer Draws Rutgers 0-0

8.31.21 | Men's Soccer

Piscataway, N.J. – The Temple men's soccer team (0-0-2, 0-0-0 AAC) finished out a two-game road trip to New Jersey with a 0-0 draw against Rutgers (1-0-1, 0-0-0 Big Ten). Eoin Gawronski stole the show for the Owls. He is among the first goalkeepers in NCAA history to make two-straight overtime penalty kick saves.

How it Happened
> Rutgers controlled possession early but were unable to put a shot on goal.
> The game was interrupted by a 45-minute lightning delay at the 12-minute mark.
> The Scarlet Knights continued their attack once play resumed, but the Owls' defense stood tall. Temple only allowed one shot on target that was saved by Gawronski with ease.
> The Cherry and White began to rally in the 25th minute with a pair of shots from defender Mickael Borger.
> Rutgers forward Joey Zalinsky fired a laser to the bottom-center of the goal, but Gawronski reacted with lightning-quick reflexes to keep the score knotted at zero.
> An illegal slide tackle in the 45th minute resulted in a Rutgers player being sent off with a red card and a yellow card being issued on a Temple player.
> The second half started quietly with neither team gaining a foothold early.
> Andres Charles fired off two shots two of what would be only three shots in the half. There would be no shots past the 60th minute, putting the match into overtime.
> The first overtime featured only one shot, but it was the highlight of the match. After a slide tackle in the box, Rutgers was awarded a penalty kick. Nico Rosamilia lined up to take the shot and sent it to the left side of the goal. Gawronski beat the ball to the spot and punched the ball out of bounds to prevent any rebound opportunity.
> Chaim Roserie had the only shot of the second overtime. The forward gunned a shot from the top of the box that was blocked by a Rutgers defender. The match ended with Temple's second straight 0-0 draw.

 Game Notes
> Jimi Leder, Andrew Burkhardt, and Xavier Rimpel made their season debut for the Owls. For Rimpel it is his first collegiate action
> This was the fifth straight overtime match Temple has played in dating back to last season.
> Five yellow cards and one red card were issued in this match, three yellow cards were given to Temple, two were granted to Rutgers. The lone red card was given to Rutgers.
>This match marks the first time Temple has played in two 0-0 games in the same season since 2003. It is the first time the Owls' have played in back-to-back scoreless games since 1955.
> With his clean sheet today, Gawronski now has four clean sheets in only nine career starts.

From the Coach
> "We have good players and were able to plug them in and they've done a good job. They're committed and work hard, those are some attributes that you love to see." -- head coach Brian Rowland.
