Temple Football kicked off the return to practice with its annual AAC Media Day. Third-year head coach Rod Carey answered questions for the media as the team ventured up to New York for a remote fall training camp.

Temple enters the season after a disappointing 2020 season. Due to COVID-19 and an injury-riddled season, the Owls had 22 players make their first-ever collegiate start last season, the fourth-most in the nation. The departures of single-digit players Branden Mack and Daniel Archibong to the NFL give current single-digits Jadan Blue, Randle Jones, William Kwenkeu, and Amir Tyler an opportunity to lead a team with a host of fresh faces.

Incoming transfers Amad Anderson Jr. (Purdue), Ra'Von Bonner (Illinois), Iverson Clement (Florida), Xach Gill (North Carolina), Jerquavion Mahone (Kentucky), D'Wan Mathis (Georgia), Will Rodgers (Washington State), Cameron Ruiz (Northwestern), and Lancine Turay (North Carolina) all join the program from Power 5 schools while cornerback Keyshawn Paul comes back into the AAC from UConn.

Just below the scheduled media availability and posted press conferences, OwlSports.com will post a daily practice blog on this site.

August 5
The Owls started off fall camp with a bang as the team got underway in the Bronx. Big plays from the offensive and defensive sides of the ball contributed to a high-energy practice for the Cherry & White. Interceptions from cornerbacks Ty Mason and Elijah Clark in quick succession in 7-on-7 drills had the defense on the front foot heading into 11-on-11 drills. The offense responded with a few counter-punches of their own, however, as 65-yard touchdown passes from QB Justin Lynch to WR Malik Cooper and from QB Re-al Mitchell to TE David Martin-Robinson got the offense on the board. As for the special teams, big legs flashed early in the day as kickers Rory Bell and Liam Hart went toe-to-toe, both drilling 48-yard field goals.

August 6
Some fresh faces made a big impact at practice today as defensive backs Keyshawn Paul and Corey Cuascut-Palmer snagged interceptions in 1-on-1 drills to get things started. Later on in 7-on-7 drills, CB Cameron Ruiz tipped a ball in the air which was intercepted by Chauncey Moore. QB Justin Lynch followed up yesterday's 65-yard touchdown with another beautifully thrown ball in the corner of the end zone to WR Zae Baines. TE David Martin-Robinson caught a touchdown of his own today as QB Mariano Valenti delivered a bullet pass to him in the back of the end zone.

August 7
The wide receivers got things started for the Owls today as highlight reel catches were hauled in by De'Von Fox, Kadas Reams, and Ronnie Stevenson. However, the defense responded with great plays of their own and won the day today as the unit stifled the offense on multiple occasions today, forcing punts and field goals. CB Elijah Clark shed a block to force a stop behind the line of scrimmage, while the Temple pass rush made life uncomfortable for the Owls' quarterbacks.

August 9
A cloudy, overcast day in the Bronx didn't stop the Owls from notching another productive practice under their belt. SAF Alex Odom jumped a route early on in 1-on-1 drills. Terrific throws from quarterbacks Justin Lynch, D'Wan Mathis, and Mariano Valenti stood out as the plays of the day. The first came from Mathis to WR Kwesi Evans in 7-on-7 drills as Evans made a basket catch in the corner of the endzone. Later on, Lynch delivered a 30-yard dart across the middle of the field to WR Nazir Burnett, while Valenti threw a strike of his own to freshman WR Malik Cooper for a 35-yard touchdown.

August 10
The defensive side of the ball was flying around the field today making plays in the backfield and in the secondary. SAF DaeSean Winston snagged an interception, while CB Freddie Johnson had a few pass breakups of his own. Later on, linebacker Kobe Wilson forced a fumble which was returned for a touchdown. On the offensive side of the ball, single-digit receiver Jadan Blue caught a pair of 50-yard passes from QB D'Wan Mathis for touchdowns.

August 11
Big plays occurred all over the field today on both sides of the ball for the Owls. On the defensive side of the ball, leaping pass deflections from CB Jalen McMurray and LB Jordan Magee prevented catches, while defensive lineman Will Rodgers and linebacker Kobe Wilson managed to get in the backfield to force fumbles. On the offensive side, WR Jordan Smith made a diving catch on a crossing route, and WR Ronnie Stevenson made a leaping catch in the corner of the end zone on a jump ball. The main man of the day, however, was TE David Martin-Robinson. Martin-Robinson hauled in two passes for 40+ yard gains, and made the play of the day: a 25-yard one-handed catch for a touchdown.

August 12
The ground game provided a spark today as Trey Blair and Edward Saydee were able to gain 20+ yards on a couple of rushes. Through the air, single-digit wide receiver Randle Jones caught
a 40-yard touchdown in the corner of the end zone from QB D'Wan Mathis, while WR Ronnie Stevenson found a pocket of space in the defense for a 35-yard catch down the sideline.
August 13
The rushing attack picked up where they left off yesterday, this time in the form of RB Kyle Dobbins who broke off back-to-back 15-yard runs for first downs. Shortly thereafter, a 50-yard punt from Adam Barry downed inside the 10-yard line capped off a nice day for the special teams unit. Big plays happened through the air on both sides of the ball as SAF Chauncey Moore recorded a pass breakup 30 yards down the field. On the other end, wide receivers Jose Barbon, De'Von Fox, and Kadas Reams all caught passes for 20+ yards, two of them going for touchdowns.

August 14
The Owls held their first scrimmage of fall camp today, giving players the opportunity to showcase their skills in a game-like scenario.

On the defensive side of the ball, multiple players capitalized on the opportunity to force turnovers as CB Freddie Johnson forced a fumble and recovered the ball. Through the air, cornerback Ty Mason, SAF Alex Odom, and BUBO Kwantel Raines recorded interceptions, while Raines also added a sack to his name. On the offensive end, TE Connor Noble caught a pair of 20-yard touchdowns, and WR Amad Anderson Jr. made the play of the day as the Purdue transfer caught a slant pass and hurdled a defender for a 30-yard gain.

August 16
The Owls were back on their old stomping grounds today on Chodoff Field at Edberg-Olson Hall after spending the first portion of fall camp in the Bronx. WR De'Von Fox provided the first big play of the day with a contested catch across the middle which he then ran into the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown. In the final portion of practice, TE David Martin-Robinson made the play of the day by way of a 25-yard touchdown off of a jump ball. Shortly thereafter, CB Keyshawn Paul prevented a touchdown with a great defensive play by ripping the ball out of a receiver's hands.

August 17
A forced fumble by Will Rodgers early on in the practice set the tone for the rest of the day. CB Cameron Ruiz got in on the action himself with a diving pass delfection in the middle of the field to prevent a touchdown. However, the play of the day would come from the offense as QB D'Wan Mathis aired out a deep ball to wide receiver Randle Jones for a 60-yard touchdown during 11-on-11 drills.

August 18
The defense stole the headlines today as an interception from CB Keyshawn Paul early on got the day started. Safety DaeSean Winston and freshman CB Corey Cuascut-Palmer made sure to get in on the action as well with interceptions of their own, with Winston's being a toe-tap sideline grab after a tipped pass. Freshman DT Demerick Morris gave the offensive line fits today including a tackle for loss. On the other side of the ball, WR Randle Jones' 40-yard catch and run on a throw from QB D'Wan Mathis highlighted the day for the offense.

August 19
The run game got things started for the Owls as runs from Trey Blair and Edward Saydee moved the chains early on in the day. From there, QB D'Wan Mathis rolled outside the pocket and hit WR Jadan Blue down the sideline for 30 yards. From the defense, a tipped pass from CB Corey Cuascut-Palmer ended up in the hands of CB Jeremy Jennings who returned the interception 20 yards the other way.

August 20
A wet, rainy day didn't stop the Owls from making big plays all over the field. Freshman CB Jalen McMurray started the action with a forced fumble and recovery which he returned 30 yards for a touchdown. A pair of 50-yard touchdowns from QB D'Wan Mathis to TE David Martin-Robinson and WR Randle Jones highlighted the day for the offense. The player of the day, however, came from the defensive side of the ball as safety DaeSean Winston forced a fumble, and then grabbed an interception deep down the field a few plays later.

August 24
After a few days off from practice, the Owls were back in action today with classes now underway at Temple University. Kicker Rory Bell got things started by splitting the uprights on multiple field goals to open practice. From there, the wide receivers showed their skills as wide receivers Jose Barbon and Randle Jones caught a variety of passes to move the chains. The play of the day came from WR De'Von Fox on a 30-yard touchdown catch down the sideline.

August 25
It was another good day through the air for the Owls as the passing attack efficiently moved the ball throughout the day. Wide receivers Jose Barbon and Randle Jones caught passes all over the field for short gains, while WR Jadan Blue snagged a pair of 25+ yard passes from QB D'Wan Mathis for first downs. The play of the day came from WR Amad Anderson Jr. as the redshirt sophomore caught a 60-yard pass down the middle for a touchdown.

With fall training camp coming to a close, this marks the end of the blog. Beginning Monday, be on the lookout for weekly game notes in advance of the upcoming game.
