Volleyball to Host City Classic

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple volleyball team will close out non-conference play this weekend at the City Classic, hosted by Temple. The Owls will open play on Friday at 5:30 p.m. against Villanova before facing Penn at 11 a.m. and Princeton at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Owl About Temple
This season, Temple is off to a 3-5 start. The Owls have seen wins over Rider (3-2), LIU (3-0), and Lehigh (3-0). Gem Grimshaw has been a force this season, being named to the All-Tournament after each tournament so far. Miray Bolukbasi and Katerina Papazoglou have also been tabbed.
Gem Grimshaw leads the Owls' offense on the right side with 3.43 kills per set, she also adds 2.53 digs per frame to rank second on the team. Miray Bolukbasi (2.63 k/s) and Katerina Papazoglou (2.17 k/s) also provide offense from the outside. In the middle, Taylor Davenport averages 1.37 kills per set, with a team-leading 1.10 blocks per frame. Patrycja Zielinska distributes the offense to the tune of 7.73 assists per set, while Falanika Danielson leads the team with 4.83 digs per set.Â

Penn enters the tournament with a 3-4 record, sweeping the Sheraton University City Volleyball Invitational before dropping the last four matches. The Quakers went 0-3 at the Depaul Invitational and fell 3-1 to Lehigh earlier this week.
Temple vs. Penn
Temple and Penn have met 33 times in series history, with the Owls holding 21-12 advantage. The Quakers are 6-4 in the last 10 matches in the series, with the last meeting in 2016 ending in aa 3-0 Cherry and White victory. This is the first time the teams will meet outside the Palestra since since 2005.
Scouting Princeton
Princeton is off to a 4-2 start after sweeping the Ellis Rowland Memorial Tournament last weekend at Colgate. The Tigers topped Cleveland State in four sets before going to five against Colgate and downing Hofstra in straight sets. This will be the third and final tournament for Princeton as they open Ivy League play next weekend after the conference opted out of the 2020-21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This will be the 13th meeting between the teams, with Princeton holding a narrow 7-5 advantage over the Owls. The pair first met in 1983, with the Tigers topping Temple in five
sets. The last meeting was a 2019 Princeton 3-0 victory, with the Tigers snapping Temple's two-game win streak.
Scouting Villanova
Villanova is 6-3 on the season after sweeping the Northeastern Tournament last weekend. This will be the third and final tournament for the Wildcats, who have seen wins over
2021 Temple opponents Rider and one Delaware.

Temple and Villanova will meet for the 46th time in series history, with Temple holding a 24-21 series edge. The teams last met in 2019, with the Wildcats earning a 3-1 home
victory. The Owls are on a three-game losing streak, last defeating the Wildcats 3-0 at Penn in 2016.
