Golf Looks to Continue Record-Setting Start at Cornell Invitational
9.18.21 | Men's Golf
Watchung, N.J. – Coming off a fourth-place finish at the GolfWeek Fall Challenge and a record-setting performance by all-Region honoree Conor McGrath, the Temple golf team heads to 6,911-yard, par-71 Watchung Valley Golf Club to take part in the 12-team Cornell Invitational.
Previewing the Tournament
> McGrath, who placed second among 93 golfers at the Golf Week Fall Challenge, set two school records at the season-opening tournament with a 13-under 203. He leads the Owls with a 67.7 stroke per round average.
> True freshman Ethan Whitney had a tremendous debut tournament, placing 21st overall and ranking second on the team with a 71.0 stroke per round average.
> Graham Chase, who recorded his first collegiate hole-in-one in the final round of the GolfWeek Fall Challenge on Tuesday, boasts a 72.7 average while Dawson Anders (72.3) and Joey Morganti (74.3) round out the Temple five.
> Buddy Hansen, who competed in all but one tournament in 2020-21, is playing as an independent.
The Field
> Ten schools will compete in the Cornell Invitational: Binghamton, Colgate, Columbia, Cornell, Lafayette, Penn, Princeton, Saint Joseph's, Siena and Temple.
> Colgate and Penn will have two teams in the field.
> As Cornell did not have any intercollegiate competition during the 2020-21 season, the defending champion of this goes back to 2019 – when Columbia eked out the title by one stroke over Bucknell at Cornell's Robert Trent Jones Golf Course.
> The tournament will feature two 18-hole rounds with Sunday's tee time scheduled for noon and Monday set for 8:00 a.m.
Quotable - Temple Coach Brian Quinn
> "We are excited to play a great golf course, Watchung Valley Golf Club. We hope to build off of the tournament in South Carolina. We have some solid players with a ton of upside!"
