Football Routs Wagner, 41-7

9.25.21 | Football

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple Owls (2-2, 0-0) defeated the Wagner Seahawks (0-4, 0-2) by a score of 41-7. The win marks the first one at home this season for the Owls. After falling behind 7-0 after Wagner's first drive, Temple responded nicely, rattling off 41 straight points to win in convincing fashion.

How It Happened
First Quarter
After failing to stop the Seahawks on multiple fourth-down attempts in the opening drive, a 50-yard rush by Rickey Spruill down to the one-yard line set up the opening touchdown for Wagner. Following an empty possession to start the game for the Owls, a strip-sack from linebacker Kobe Wilson thwarted the next Seahawks' drive. Empty possessions from that point ended the first quarter with Temple threatening in Wagner territory.

Second Quarter
Shortly after the start of the second quarter, the Owls got in the board after Kyle Dobbins pitched the ball to wide receiver Jose Barbon for a long gain. A few plays later after quarterback D'Wan Mathis ran for a fourth-down conversion, Dobbins punched it in from the one-yard line to put the Owls on the board. The Temple defense did its job once again on the next Seahawks drive, forcing a three-and-out. From there, multiple completions from Mathis to Barbon moved the ball down the field and into Wagner territory. A stalled drive, however, resulted in a 47-yard field goal from Rory Bell midway through the quarter. A Manny Walker interception off a screen pass on the ensuing possession gave the Cherry & White the ball back. A few plays later, thanks to a strong rushing attack, Dobbins was able to get into the endzone for his second touchdown of the day to extend the Owls' lead. Towards the end of the half, a muffed punt gave Wagner the ball back, but the Seahawks were not able to convert on the opportunity, missing the 48-yard field goal.

Third Quarter
The connection between Mathis and Barbon picked up right where it left off as the pair connected once again, this time for a 48-yard gain. Temple could not convert the touchdown, however, and were forced to settle for another field goal with just under 12 minutes remaining in the quarter. A quick defensive stand gave the Owls the ball back which the Owls took full advantage of. A 27-yard gain from Mathis to Amad Anderson Jr. moved Temple into Wagner territory. A few plays later, Dobbins ran into the endzone for his third touchdown of the game. On the next Temple drive, Mathis hit an open Kadas Reams deep down the middle for a 44-yard touchdown to extend the Owls' lead to 34-7.

Fourth Quarter
Empty drives for both sides started the final period before the Owls started to make strides again midway through the quarter thanks to first down receptions from Barbon and tight end Darius Pittman. A second touchdown by Kadas Reams capped off the drive for the Cherry & White to stretch the lead.

Statistically Speaking
  • Barbon: eight receptions, 130 receiving yards
  • Dobbins: 14 carries, three rushing touchdowns
  • Mathis: 292 passing yards, two passing touchdowns
  • Reams: 65 receiving yards, two receiving touchdowns
