Football Homecoming Clash Set Against Memphis

9.27.21 | Football

THIS WEEK
Temple's home stretch continues this week against the Memphis Tigers with its third straight home game. It will be both teams first American Athletic Conference game this season. This will be Temple's homecoming game. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00pm and will air on ESPNU and 97.5 The Fanatic.

LAST WEEK
After a slow start out of the gates which led to a 7-0 deficit at the end of the first first quarter, the Owls were able to right the ship, scoring 41 unanswered points to defeat Wagner. The Seahawks scored on their opening drive, but an interception from defensive end Manny Walker and two first-half rushing touchdowns from RB Kyle Dobbins gave the Owls the lead going into hafltime. Temple didn't look back from there as another rushing touchdown from Dobbins and two receiving touchdowns for wide receiver Kadas Reams sealed the game for the Cherry & White.

LAST TIME VS. MEMPHIS
The last time that the Owls faced off against Memphis, the Tigers won 41-29 at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium one year ago. Temple led 15-10 at the half, but consecutive turnovers on its first two possessions of the second half led to 17 straight points for Memphis. The Owls traded touchdowns with the Tigers throughout the next 10 minutes to keep the game within one score, but a Memphis touchdown with just over two minutes remaining virtually ended the game. Temple QB Anthony Russo passed for 387 and four touchdowns, three to wide receiver Jadan Blue. Russo set Temple school records for completions (41) and attempts (63) in leading the Owls to 500 total yards of offense. Blue set a new career-high with his three touchdowns and tied his career-high with 13 catches. Randle Jones also set new highs with 12 catches for 118 yards.

LAST TIME VS. MEMPHIS @ LINCOLN FINACIAL FIELD
The last time that Temple played Memphis at Lincoln Financial Field was on October 12, 2019 when the Owls came out with a 30-28 victory on homecoming. The Owls got off to a hot start, thanks in large part to three field goals by Will Mobley within 18 minutes of the opening whistle. A one-yard touchdown from Jager Gardner meant that Temple held a 16-0 lead midway through the second quarter. After exchanging touchdowns throughout the second and third quarters, Temple QB Anthony Russo found WR Branden Mack for a 12-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter to extend the Owls lead to 30-21. A late Memphis touchdown made for an anxious finish but Temple held on for the win. The win meant that Rod Carey became the first Temple head coach since Wayne Hardin in 1979 to start a season 5-1, and it was the first time in Temple's history that a team beat two ranked teams in a season.
