Temple Travels to Akron This Saturday
9.6.21 | Football
THIS WEEK
After a disappointing season opener, the Owls travel to Akron to take on the Zips at InfoCision Stadium. Kickoff will be at 3:30pm and will air on ESPN+ and 97.5 The Fanatic.
LAST WEEK
Last week, Temple made the short drive over to Piscataway, N.J. and the Battle of the Delaware River for its season opener against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. The first game of the season did not go as hoped for the Owls, however, as the Cherry & White lost their first game of the season by a score of 61-14. Three turnovers in the first half put the Owls in a 19-point hole that they were unable to overcome. The Owls first possession of the game started from their own one-yard line which led to a safety a few plays later. The aforementioned turnovers gave Rutgers good field position throughout the rest of the first quarter which the Scarlet Knights were able to capitalize on to build a 26-0 lead. From there, the Owls bounced back to score 14 unanswered points to cut the deficit to 12 early in the third quarter. Shortly afterwards though, an injury to QB D'Wan Mathis sidelined him for the rest of the afternoon, and the Owls were unable to put more points on the board. 35 unanswered points for the Scarlet Knights put the game to bed.
LAST TIME VS. AKRON
The last time Temple squared off against Akron was back in 2011, when Steve Addazio's Owls beat the Zips by a score of 41-3. The game featured a 79-minute delay due to lightning, but that did not slow down the Cherry & White. Bernard Pierce, the Owls' All-Conference running back, rushed for 150 yards and three touchdowns, all coming in the first half. The defense was led by senior linebacker, Stephen Johnson, who had a game-high seven tackles and a forced fumble. Linebacker Ahkeem Smith had a monster game himself, racking up five tackles, 1.5 sacks, and an interception. The Owls as a team sacked Akron quarterback, Clayton Moore, eight times. A complete performance on both sides of the ball led to the Owls' impressive win over the Zips.
UP NEXT
Temple will be back in action next weekend when they host Boston College at Lincoln Financial Field for their home opener. Kickoff will be at 12:00pm and will air on ESPNU/2.
