Owls in the NFL - Wild Card Weekend Results
1.18.22 | Football
As the 2021 postseason continues on the road to Super Bowl LVI, it's clear that Temple Football fans are rooting for a Buffalo Bills versus Tampa Bay Buccaneers matchup on February 13, at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
The Bills made a statement on Saturday that they are in this for the long haul. Dion Dawkins (2013-16) helped an offense that scored a touchdown on EVERY possession (with the exception of a kneel down on the final drive). They became the first team in NFL playoff history to go an entire game without a punt, field goal or turnover.
With its 47-17 beat down of their rival New England Patriots, the Bills advanced to the Divisional Round where they will head to Kansas City to face the Chiefs on Sunday night. Philadelphia fans might refer to this game as "Big Red" Andy Reid against "Little Red" Sean McDermott in the battle of head coaches who once worked together for the Eagles. Temple fans, however, will be rooting for "Dirty Red" Tyler Matakevich (2012-15) who remains one of the most decorated and favorite players in school history. The Bills special teams captain had three tackles in the win over New England.
Bruce Arians (1983-88) and his Tampa Bay squad advanced to the next round with a 31-15 win over Shaun Bradley's (2016-19) Philadelphia Eagles. On Sunday afternoon, the Buccaneers will host the Los Angeles Rams who defeated Michael Dogbe's (2014-18) Arizona Cardinals, 34-11, on Monday night.
Arians is not the only Buc that Owls fans can cheer. He has seven coaching staff members with ties to Temple. Special teams coordinator Keith Armstrong (1983-86), defensive coordinator Todd Bowles (1982-85), quarterback coach Clyde Christensen (1983-85), assistant defensive line coach Lori Locust (1985), running backs coach Todd McNair (1985-88), safeties coach Nick Rapone (1983-86), and cornerbacks coach Kevin Ross (1980-83) are all hoping to be the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since the 2003-04 New England Patriots.
Also worth rooting for by Owls fans are the Cincinnati Bengals. Former Temple head coach Al Golden (2006-10) serves as the linebackers coach and Chris Myarick (2015-19) is on the Bengals' practice squad. They open the Divisional Round travelling to Tennessee on Saturday afternoon after Cincinnati's first playoff win in 31-years – a 26-19 win over Las Vegas last Saturday.
