Women’s Soccer Blanks LIU, 5-0

10.1.22 | Women's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's soccer (1-5-4, 0-2-0 AAC) throttled past LIU (3-7-3, 1-1-2 NEC) on Saturday night, downing the visiting Sharks, 5-0. The Owls capitalized on their offensive efforts, converting on three set pieces, which included a brace from Katie Coritz to end the night with the 5-0 win.

How it Happened
  • After back-and-forth play in the opening minutes, the Owls continued to push the pace, finding the the go-ahead goal in the 26th minute. Carly Steinberg received the ball from Moa Andersson in the midfield, launching a line drive to the bottom right corner of the goal from far range for the 1-0 advantage.
  • The Cherry and White kept the momentum alive, striking again less than two minutes later. Phoebe Hollin sent the ball into the box on a corner, where Roisin McGovern looked for the tap-in. Coritz found the deflection, rocketing the second shot of the day past the hands of LIU keeper, Kayla DeTreux.
  • Temple continued to exert their offensive pressure, earning yet another set piece goal. Hollin sent the ball to the back post where Jillian Allgood found the header for goal number three of the day.
  • With only four minutes remaining in the half, Coritz struck again. Alexa Swetz looked for the finish of a Hollin corner, but Coritz found the deflection once again to extend the advantage to four by half.
  • The Owls continued to work tirelessly throughout the second half, finally breaking through again in the 71st minute. Emily Kavanaugh found Sumaya Togba on the right wing, who finished on a grounder to the bottom right corner of the goal to end the match 5-0.

From the Coach
"When we got chances to score goals tonight, we did," head coach Nick Bochette said. "We were more clinical in our finishing, and we showed more quality in our attacking third. There are definitely areas that we still want to improve upon as we move forward, but tonight we took care of our chances and it showed."

Game Notes
  • Allgood secured her first career goal, netting the third goal of the match on a 37th minute header.
  • Coritz joined Allgood, netting her first career goal tonight, including her first career brace, finishing off two set-pieces for the Owls.
  • The five-goal performance serves as the most goals scored by the program in a single game since Sept. 17, 2017, in the 8-0 win over Delaware State.
