Crew Opens Season Strong at Navy Day Regatta
10.16.22 | Men's Crew
PHILADELPHIA — Temple Crew kicked off its 2022-23 season on the Schuylkill River Sunday with the Navy Day Regatta. The Owls had 11 boats compete in four separate races with team picking up two golds, a silver and a bronze on the day.
Pairs
> Temple's Kenneth Raynor and Adam Oliver won in a time of 13:22.2 with the Owls' Trent Tighelaar and Ian Hedin earning a bronze medal (13:44.39).
Varsity Four
> The Owls four of Hunter Metnick (cox), Rares Nechita (4), Slavko Savic (3), Dimitrios Stasinos (2) and Brandon VanVuuren (bow) won with a time of 12:16.13.
> Temple's "C" boat was eight overall (12:42.08), while the "B" boat took ninth (12:42.20), and "D" boat finished 12th (12:49.26) in the 27-boat field.
Junior Varsity Eight
> Temple's "A" boat, stroked by Erich Sands, garnered a silver medal with a time of 11:44.02 with the Owls "B" boat finishing seventh (12:18.60).
Varsity Eight
> Temple's top boat placed fifth place with a time of 11:15.57.
> Temple's "B" boat finished in eighth place with a time of 11:17.83, with the team's "C" boat placing 14th in 11:42.49.

"This was our best Navy Day Regatta in 25 years. We placed first and third in the Open Pair, first in the Collegiate 4, second in the JV8 and fifth in the Varsity 8. All Temple crews but one finished in the top half of the field in every event.
But we also showed areas that to be improved upon. We can't be happy with minor improvements. We expect more from this year's team. And we must demand more.
