PHILADELPHIA – Temple Women's Rowing opened its 2022-23 season Sunday at the Navy Day Regatta and the Owls earned a gold and a silver medal in a strong day on the Schuylkill River.
Varsity Four
> Gemma Wollenschlaeger stroked the Owls' Varsity 4 "C" boat that captured the silver medal with a time of 13:37.75, four seconds behind Penn. Temple's "A" boat placed 11th while its "B" boat finished 18th and "D" boat finished 37th overall in the 44-boat field.
Junior Varsity Eight
> Temple's "A" boat consisting of Alex Catalano (cox), Giselle Kiriacos (stroke), Grace Dulin (7), Valeriia Demateva (6), Emma Inglis (5), Kendyll Petronick (4), Aine Playdon (3), Olivia Elliott (2) and Madelyn Fox (bow) won the JV 8 race, defeating city-rival Drexel by nearly eight seconds with a time of 13:10.22. The Owls' "B" boat finished seventh overall.
Varsity Eight
> Temple's top boat, stroked by Lily Bielinski, was less that one second from the medal stand, finishing fourth with a time of 12:44.23.
Quotable: Head Coach Rebecca Grzybowski
"Today was a great way to kick off the racing season. I think we really capitalized on the race opportunity, and I was impressed with the collective maturity, preparation and learning that took place across all boats. Of course, it's always fun when the execution results in a win so I was really happy for the JV8 - they had a great performance!
Overall, we saw a lot of really aggressive racing and team energy was awesome! I'm excited about where we can go from here and team is too. Go Owls!"
