Owls' Volleyball Falls in Four To Houston

10.2.22 | Women's Volleyball

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple Volleyball team fell short of knocking off the Houston Cougars on Sunday in McGonigle Hall as they lost 1-3 (21-25, 25-23, 25-14). Junior transfer Jelena Prolic led the Owls with her third double-double of the season with 11 kills and 15 digs, while sophomore Taylor Davenport had a team-high 14 kills.

With the loss, Temple falls to 7-8 overall and 1-3 in the AAC, while Houston improves to 13-1 overall and 4-0 in conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Abbie Jackson led the Cougars with a match-high 21 kills, and Kate Georgiades had a match-high 17 digs for their team in the win.
  • The Cougars had eight team service aces led by Annie Cooke's three, while the Owls tallied six with five players recording at least one. Prolic had a team-high two.
  • Temple's defense at the net kept them close with its strong presence at the net. TU had seven team blocks compared to Houston's four. Junior Kayla Spells and Prolic's had three individual blocks.

Set 1 (Houston 25, Temple 21)
  • Temple got out of the gate quickly on the Cougars. The Owls led in the set 6-4 before the Cougars scored four straight points, including a pair of Jackson kills, and taking an 8-6 advantage.
  • The Cougars never fell behind in the set from that point and went onto win 25-21.
  • Davenport kept the Owls within three points in the final stages of set one where she had four kills of Temple's final 10 points.
  • The Owls did hold the hitting percentage advantage. The Cherry and White hit .205 compared to Houston's .195.

Set 2 (Temple 25, Houston 23)
  • Houston held a four-point advantage (14-10), the largest of the second set by any team, but TU reeled off eight of the next 12 points in part of three Cougar hitting errors.
  • Temple kept the pressure on the Cougars in the second set, forcing them into a .182 hitting percentage. Houston had 16 kills in the second set, with eight errors on 44 swings.
  • Jackson was the only Cougars' player to hit over .275 in the set (.278) as she earned a set-high seven kills.
  • Prolic had a team-high four kills on eight attempts for Temple in the second-set victory.

Set 3 (Houston 25, Temple 14)
  • Other than the first point of set three, UH controlled the set throughout, allowing just three ties early on.
  • The Cougars were efficient with 14 kills on 22 swings, and just two errors.

Set 4 (Houston 25, Temple 21)
  • Just like set two, Houston held the lead to start off the stanza, jumping out to a 7-3 advantage.
  • Senior Nikki Saito came off the bench to see her first action of the season and pulled the Owls within a point (11-10) with a service ace. However, the Owls tied the score on the next point. Consequently, it led the two teams to trade scores.
  • TU went into the media timeout leading by the score of 15-14, but the Cougars quickly regained the advantage, pulling away with the 25-21 set win with the help of a pair of kills by Jackson and Kortlyn Henderson.
  • Houston held TU to a .133 hitting percentage, while hitting at .273 clip in the final set for themselves.
  • Prolic led the Owls in the final set with three kills on four swings, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars had three players with three or more kills, including five by Jackson, Henderson's four, three from Theut.
