Volleyball Falls to Cincinnati in Five

PHILADELPHIA – For the second time in as many matches, the Temple volleyball team fell in five sets. The Owls fell to Cincinnati on Friday night inside McGonigle Hall, 22-25, 17-25, 25-22, 25-20, 8-15.
 
Sophomore Taylor Davenport tied a match-high 22 kills with the Bearcats' Avry Tatum's, but it was two other UC players that recorded 15 or more kills that made the difference in the match.

The Owls drop to 7-10 overall on the season and 1-5 in the AAC, while Cincinnati improves to 4-11 overall and 2-3 in the AAC.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Carly Glendinning and Abby Walker, had 16 and 15 kills, respectively for Cincinnati
  • Both teams struggled from the service line, as the Bearcats and Owls totaled 13 errors on the night. Cincinnati had nine on the night, while Temple had eight.
  • The Bearcats held the advantage offensively, hitting .237 to the Owls' .160.
 
Set 1 (Cincinnati 25, Temple 22)
  • With the score tied, 7-7, Glendinning served four unanswered points before Temple could side out.
  • The Bearcats extended their lead to five, 20-15, before Temple was forced to use a timeout late in the set.
  • After the timeout, the Cherry and White scored a pair of points, but wasn't able to sustain a rally to tie the score.
  • Both teams struggled offensively in the set with Cincinnati hitting .140, while they held Temple to .040.
 
Set 2 (Cincinnati 25, Temple 17)
  • The Bearcats scored multiple points on five different sideouts, including a 5-0 run from Glenndinning to give her team a 12-5 advantage that Temple couldn't recover from.
  • UC hit .290 in the set with 12 kills on 31 attacks with only three errors.
  • Individually, Glenndinning had four kills in the set on seven swings with just one error, leading to a .429 average. Additionally, Tatum had three kills for the Bearcats on eight attempts with no errors.
  • Davenport led Owls' squad with seven kills on 18 swings, leading to a .333 average.
 
Set 3 (Temple 25, Cincinnati 22)
  • The Owls jumped out to an 8-4 lead to start the set as they forced six UC errors. Additionally, Temple got back-to-back-to-back kills from Jelena Prolic, Chudear Tut, and Davenport to fuel the run.
  • Just after the Temple run, the Bearcats went on their own run with the help of three Glenndinning kills and scored on five of the next seven points to tie the score, 10-10.
  • TU would score the next point and never relinquish the lead, winning the set, 25-22.
  • Temple hit .229 in the set, while holding UC to .143.
  • Freshman Samantha Jo Mikosky and sophomore transfer teamed up for three kills apiece and hitting .600 for Temple.
 
Set 4 (Temple 25, Cincinnati 20)
  • Both teams combined for six ties in the fourth set and three lead changes
  • All six ties from the third set came within the first 30 points.
  • With the score 15-15, the Owls went on a 10-5 run to earn the set victory. During the last 10 Cherry and White points, Davenport (3) and Prolic (2) combined for five kills.
  • Both teams hit over .300 in the stanza, but Temple hit .385, led by Davenports set-high seven putaways.
 
Set 5 (Cincinnati 15, Temple 8)
  • Except for a 1-1 score, Cincinnati led throughout set five.
  • During the early stages of the set, the Owls never stuck around, keeping within a pair of points of the lead.
  • Later in the set, UC's Payton Frederick ran off three consecutive points off her serve, expanding her team's lead to 13-6 lead.
  • Tatum led all hitters with five kills on a set-high .364 hitting percentage.

The Owls will return to action next Friday as they travel Florida to take on UCF on Friday, Sept. 14 and USF on Sunday, Sept. 16.
