Three Owls Drafted into XFL

11.18.22 | Football

The XFL will be back in 2023 for its third incarnation. This time around it is led by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and his business partner, Dany Garcia.

One of the big changes is the XFL's absence from any of the biggest markets in the United States. Los Angeles and New York have been replaced by San Antonio and Las Vegas, a fitting change given the size of the league. It's a blueprint authored by the USFL in 2022, which featured teams in New Jersey and Birmingham rather than cities with multiple NFL teams.

The XFL's teams are the: Arlington Renegades, D.C. Defenders, Houston Roughnecks, Orlando Guardians, St. Louis Battlehawks, San Antonio Brahmas, Seattle Sea Dragons, and Vegas Vipers

Three former Temple Owls have already been selected: running back Ryquell Armstead (D.C. Defenders), linebacker Isaiah Graham-Mobley (Arlington Renegades), and quarterback Anthony Russo (San Antonio Brahmas).

The ultimate goal for the players playing in this league, of course, is to get an NFL call. While easier said than done, it worked out for some USFL players, so the path is there.

In its last rendition in 2020, the XFL's Most Valuable Player was former Owls' quarterback P.J. Walker. Walker parlayed that season into a contract with the NFL's Carolina Panthers.
