Volleyball Falls to ECU on Thanksgiving Eve

11.23.22 | Women's Volleyball

GREENVILLE, N.C. – With the lead in hand in each of the three sets on Thanksgiving Eve versus East Carolina, the Temple Owls' volleyball team could not pull off the win against the Pirates, falling 18-25, 27-29, 24-26.

Temple falls to 10-20 overall on the season and 7-12 in AAC play, while ECU improves to 12-19 overall and 4-15 in conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Angeles Alderete hit .357 for the Pirates with a match-high 21 kills. Pirate teammate Izzy Marinelli chipped in with 12 kills.
  • Jelena Prolic led the Owls with 11 kills. The middle blocking tandem of Kayla Spells and Samantha Jo Mikosky combined for 14 kills, each player tallied seven kills apiece, while Mikosky hit .700 in the match and Spells hit .400.
  • Temple had 12 service errors in the match compared to four for East Carolina.

Set 1 (ECU 25, Temple 18)
  • Temple started the match with a 13-10 advantage as Spells began with a pair of kills, while sophomore Taylor Davenport had an ace and a kill during that stretch.
  • A pair of kills from Marinelli, one from Alderete, and one from Julianna Askew swung the advantage (15-14) to the Pirates going into the media timeout.
  • ECU went on a 10-1 run to seemingly put the first set away as they spread the ball around to five players getting at least one kill in that span.

Set 2 (ECU 29, Temple 27)
  • Going into the media timeout, the Pirates cut a three-point Owls' lead down to one point (15-14). Askew and Alderete paired up to win two of the final three points before the media break, and then came out after timeout and scored two more times to take a 16-15 advantage.
  • The Owls forced ECU into their own timeout as they answered with four of the next five points to retake the lead, 19-17, with the help of two kills from Davenport.
  • The Cherry and White continued to hold on to the lead and earn a set point (24-22), but ECU won the next two points to prolong the set.
  • Temple earned another set point at 27-26, but again the East Carolina team tied the score and moved on to win the set.
  • Alderete had 11 of her 21 kills on the night in set two as she hit .500 with just two errors.

Set 3 (ECU 26, Temple 24)
  • Back-to-back aces from Temple setter Patrycja Zielinska helped her team to a fast start in set three. TU jumped out to a 3-0 advantage and then pushed its lead to five points (15-10) as Prolic, Davenport, and Samantha Jo Mikosky each recorded a pair of kills.
  • Again, the Pirates made their move as they went on a 5-2, cutting their deficit to one point (17-16), forcing Temple into a timeout.
  • TU adjusted out of the timeout with back-to-back kills from Spells and Davenport to give themselves a two-point cushion, 19-17, forcing ECU into a timeout of its own.
  • East Carolina would tie the score at 20 all, as Alderete (3) and Marinelli (1) combined for four kills.
  • Both teams traded the lead before ECU won the final three points to finish with the match victory.
